📜 Sundar Kand Shree Ramcharitmanas by Goswami Tulsidas — Hanuman's Divine Journey to Lanka

I worship the mighty son of the Wind-god — Shree Hanuman — the ocean of wisdom, virtue, and strength. May the monkey-chief, who is the messenger of Shree Rama, bestow His grace upon me and remove all obstacles.

I bow at the lotus feet of Shree Rama, whose divine name is the very essence of all the Vedas. He who meditates upon Rama's name finds his heart purified and all his sorrows destroyed.

All glory to the Son of Anjani, Hanuman, the supreme devotee of Shree Rama. His body is as strong as a thunderbolt, his heart is as tender as a flower. He is the destroyer of the wicked and the protector of the righteous.

I worship the lotus feet of my Guru, who is the ocean of mercy and God Himself in human form. His words dispel the darkness of ignorance — I reverently salute Him before beginning this sacred narrative.

The Sundar Kand is the most beautiful and auspicious of all the seven Kands. It is the very heart of the Ramcharitmanas — whoever reads it with devotion attains all happiness and the supreme state.

Hearing the words of Jambavan, Hanuman recalled his limitless strength. The Son of the Wind rose from the ground like a massive mountain taking flight — his eyes blazing with the fire of devotion to Shree Rama.

Hanuman climbed to the summit of Mount Mahendra. His body expanded to an enormous size — he appeared like a golden mountain illumined by the rays of the sun.

The mighty monkey bowed in the direction of Shree Rama and leapt into the sky with a thunderous roar. The ocean trembled, the winds howled, and the mountain upon which he stood sank into the earth under the force of his leap.

Through the vast expanse of the sky flew Hanuman, the son of Vayu. His massive form cast a shadow upon the ocean below. Gods, gandharvas, and celestial beings watched in awe — 'Behold Rama's messenger!'

The ocean, recognising Hanuman as the servant of Shree Rama, asked Mount Mainaka to rise from its depths and offer the monkey a resting place. Mainaka rose from the water and called out — 'O great one, rest here awhile!'

Hanuman gently touched the mountain with his hand and thanked it, but refused to rest — 'I am on the mission of Shree Rama. Until my task is complete, I cannot stop even for a moment.'

Surasa, the mother of serpents, appeared before Hanuman by the order of the gods — she wished to test his wisdom. She opened her mouth wide and said — 'Enter my mouth — this is the boon granted to me.'

The clever Hanuman assumed a tiny form and entered and exited Surasa's mouth in an instant. The goddess was pleased — 'You have fulfilled the condition and shown your supreme intelligence. Go forth and accomplish Rama's work!'

A demoness named Simhika attempted to capture Hanuman by seizing his shadow. The mighty monkey destroyed her with a single blow and continued his flight across the ocean.

Having crossed the hundred-yojana ocean, Hanuman arrived at the shore of Lanka. He beheld the golden city of Ravana — magnificent, terrifying, and impregnable, perched upon Mount Trikuta.

Hanuman gazed upon Lanka — its golden ramparts, its jewelled towers, its mighty fortifications guarded by countless demons. He thought — 'This splendid city is the stronghold of the enemy of Shree Rama.'

The son of the Wind assumed a form as tiny as a mosquito and entered the city at nightfall. Lanka's guardian deity, a fierce demoness named Lankini, confronted him at the gate.

Lankini struck Hanuman, but the mighty monkey dealt her a single blow with his fist. She fell to the ground and remembered an ancient prophecy — 'When a monkey defeats me, Lanka's destruction is near.'

Lankini said — 'O great one, the prophecy has begun to unfold. Lanka's end draws near. Ravana's sins have reached their pinnacle — the Lord's justice shall now descend.'

Hanuman entered Lanka and wandered through its streets and palaces, searching for Sita. He saw the splendour of Ravana's kingdom — gold, gems, divine weapons, and countless demons revelling in luxury.

He searched every palace, every garden, every chamber — but could not find Mother Sita. Doubt crept into his heart — 'Where is She? Has the enemy hidden Her somewhere beyond my reach?'

Hanuman searched through the harem of Ravana and beheld many beautiful women in deep slumber. But Sita was not among them — the pure and virtuous consort of Shree Rama would never be found in such a place.

Growing anxious, Hanuman thought — 'If I return without finding Sita, all will be lost. The monkeys will die of grief, Sugriva will be devastated, and Rama's mission will fail. I must continue searching.'

Then Hanuman noticed a beautiful grove of Ashoka trees surrounded by high walls — the Ashoka Vatika. A divine intuition stirred within him — 'Perhaps Mother Sita is here.'

Hanuman leapt onto a Shimshupa tree within the Ashoka grove and concealed himself among its branches. From this vantage point, he surveyed the entire garden with his keen eyes.

In the predawn darkness, Hanuman's sharp eyes fell upon a figure seated beneath an Ashoka tree. She was pale, thin, and clothed in a single garment — but her divine radiance was unmistakable.

Hanuman's heart leapt with joy — 'This is Mother Sita! The consort of my Lord Shree Rama!' But immediately his joy turned to sorrow — for he saw Her condition of extreme distress.

Sita was surrounded by fierce demonesses who guarded Her day and night. She sat on the bare ground, her hair unkempt, Her body emaciated from fasting — yet Her devotion to Shree Rama shone like an undimmed lamp.

Hanuman observed Sita from his hidden perch and tears filled his eyes. He thought — 'O Mother! What suffering You endure for the sake of Dharma! Your devotion to the Lord is the very ideal of womanhood.'

Sita chanted the name of Rama continuously — 'Rama... Rama...' It was the only sustenance that kept Her alive in that prison of demons. The holy name was Her food, Her shelter, and Her hope.

Hanuman waited patiently upon the tree, observing everything with care. He needed to find the right moment to approach Mother Sita — for any mistake could endanger both Her life and Rama's mission.

As dawn approached, the demon king Ravana himself came to the Ashoka grove. Adorned with gold and jewels, he appeared magnificent — yet his heart was filled with arrogance and lust.

Ravana approached Sita and spoke with honeyed words — 'O beautiful one! Why do you suffer needlessly? Become my queen and enjoy the splendours of Lanka. Forget that mortal prince Rama.'

Sita, holding a blade of grass before her face, replied with fearless contempt — 'O ten-headed one! You speak of Shree Rama as a mortal? He is the Supreme Lord, the Destroyer of demons. Your days are numbered.'

Sita continued — 'Listen, O wretched Ravana! Shree Rama is like the mighty lion and you are but a jackal. You have stolen me by deceit — but you cannot escape the arrows of my Lord.'

Ravana's face darkened with rage. He thundered — 'If you do not submit within one month, I shall have you killed and eaten by my demonesses!' With this terrible threat, he departed.

After Ravana left, the demonesses redoubled their torment of Sita. They assumed fearful shapes and threatened Her — 'Accept Ravana or die! Why do you cling to this foolish devotion?'

Sita was unmoved by their threats. She closed Her eyes and meditated upon Shree Rama — His beautiful face, His lotus eyes, His gentle smile. In Her heart, the Lord was ever present.

One compassionate demoness named Trijata came forward and silenced the others. She said — 'Sisters, do not trouble this divine lady. I have had a prophetic dream — Rama shall come and destroy Lanka.'

Trijata narrated her dream — 'I saw a mighty monkey setting Lanka ablaze. I saw Ravana riding a donkey towards the south (the direction of death). And I saw Sita reunited with Rama in glory.'

Hearing Trijata's words, the demonesses grew afraid and withdrew. Sita found temporary relief — but Her heart was still heavy with the anguish of separation from Her beloved Lord.

Sita thought — 'O Rama, where are You? Do You know of my suffering? Will You come to rescue me, or am I destined to perish in this land of demons?'

In Her despair, Sita contemplated ending Her life. She thought — 'If the Lord does not come, what is the purpose of living? Better to die than to suffer this endless torment.'

But just then, Hanuman, still hidden in the tree, began to softly sing the praises of Shree Rama. His sweet voice drifted down like nectar from heaven — telling the story of Rama's glory and greatness.

Sita heard the words and Her heart stirred with hope. She looked up and said — 'Who speaks of my Lord? Whose voice brings the nectar of Rama's name to my ears in this demon-land?'

Hanuman gently dropped Shree Rama's signet ring before Sita. She picked it up with trembling hands — and recognising the sacred ring, She was overwhelmed with joy and wonder.

Sita pressed the ring to Her heart and wept tears of happiness — 'This is Rama's ring! My Lord has not forgotten me! A messenger has come — blessed is this day!'

Hanuman descended from the tree and appeared before Sita in a small, humble form. He bowed at Her feet and said — 'O Mother, I am Hanuman, the humble servant of Shree Rama. He has sent me to find You.'

Sita beheld the devoted monkey and Her eyes overflowed with grateful tears. She said — 'O Hanuman, you have given me life! Tell me — how is my Lord? Is He well? Does He remember me?'

Hanuman bowed reverently and began to narrate the entire story — how Shree Rama and Lakshmana had befriended Sugriva, how the monkey army was searching for Her, and how the Lord constantly thought of Her.

Hanuman said — 'O Mother, Shree Rama is well in body but tormented by the fire of separation from You. He wanders through the forests calling Your name. His eyes shed tears like the clouds shed rain.'

Sita said — 'Tell me more, O Hanuman. Describe my Lord's appearance to me — His beautiful face, His lotus eyes, His mighty arms. Let me hear of His glories and find solace.'

Hanuman described the Lord's divine form with great eloquence — 'O Mother, Shree Rama's complexion is like a rain-laden cloud. His eyes are like blooming lotuses. His smile illuminates the three worlds.'

Hearing Hanuman's words, Sita closed Her eyes and beheld Rama in Her heart. A gentle smile graced Her lips — for a brief moment, the agony of separation was replaced by the bliss of remembrance.

Sita asked — 'O Hanuman, how did you cross the mighty ocean? You are small in stature — how did you accomplish this impossible feat?' Hanuman replied — 'By the power of Shree Rama's name, Mother, even the impossible becomes easy.'

Hanuman said — 'O Mother, the name of Shree Rama is my strength, my wisdom, and my courage. With His name upon my lips and His form in my heart, there is nothing in all the three worlds that can stop me.'

Sita was deeply moved by Hanuman's supreme devotion. She said — 'O son, you are blessed among all creatures. Your love for Shree Rama is the purest I have ever witnessed.'

Hanuman then delivered Shree Rama's message to Sita — 'The Lord says — O Sita, be patient. I shall come with a mighty army, destroy Ravana and all his demons, and bring You back to Ayodhya in triumph.'

Sita received the Lord's message with deep emotion. She said — 'Tell my Lord that I have not a single moment of freedom from the torment of these demons. He must come quickly.'

Hanuman said — 'Mother, if you permit me, I can carry You upon my back across the ocean to Shree Rama right now. I have the strength to do it — nothing is impossible for the servant of the Lord.'

Sita smiled at Hanuman's devotion but said — 'O son, your devotion touches my heart. But the glory of this rescue must belong to Shree Rama alone. He must come Himself and destroy this evil.'

Sita continued — 'If you were to carry me away, the world would say that a monkey accomplished what Rama could not. The Lord must come in His full glory and crush the enemy — this is the divine plan.'

Hanuman accepted Sita's wisdom with a bowed head and said — 'Mother, Your words are the very embodiment of dharma and truth. I shall return to the Lord and deliver Your message.'

Sita gave Hanuman Her Chudamani (crest-jewel) as a token for Shree Rama. She said — 'Give this to my Lord and tell Him that I await His arrival with every breath I take.'

Sita blessed Hanuman — 'May you be endowed with the eight siddhis and the nine treasures of devotion. May you always remain the most beloved servant of Shree Rama.'

Hanuman received the Chudamani with the utmost reverence. He placed it upon his head and bowed deeply at Sita's feet — 'O Mother, I shall convey Your message and Your token to the Lord without delay.'

Sita then spoke of Her suffering — 'O Hanuman, these demonesses torment me day and night. Ravana comes every morning with his threats. Tell Rama that I have endured only because of His name.'

Hanuman's eyes filled with tears of righteous anger. He said — 'O Mother, Ravana's days are numbered. When Shree Rama's arrows descend upon Lanka, not a single demon shall survive.'

Sita said — 'Tell my Lord that His Sita remembers Him in every breath, every heartbeat. His name is my food, His remembrance is my shelter. Without Him, this body is nothing but a living corpse.'

Hanuman said — 'Mother, be at peace. Shree Rama will come. The Lord who sustains the entire universe will surely protect His own beloved. I swear upon His holy name — liberation is near.'

The meeting between Hanuman and Sita in the Ashoka Vatika is one of the most sacred episodes in all of spiritual literature. Here, devotion met devotion — and together they affirmed that Rama's victory was certain.

Hanuman then requested Sita's permission to explore Lanka further and test the strength of Ravana's forces. 'Mother, let me create a commotion so that I may gauge the enemy before departing.'

Sita said — 'O son, be careful. Lanka is full of powerful demons. Do not put yourself in unnecessary danger.' Hanuman replied — 'Where the name of Rama dwells, no danger exists, Mother.'

With Sita's blessing, Hanuman prepared to leave the Ashoka grove. He bowed at Her feet one final time and said — 'Mother, until we meet again, keep the Lord's name in Your heart. It is the shield against all evil.'

Hanuman's meeting with Sita was the turning point of the entire Ramayan. Through it, Sita received hope, Rama would receive news, and the destruction of Lanka was set in irrevocable motion.

The Son of the Wind, having accomplished the primary purpose of his mission, now turned his mind to a secondary objective — to assess Lanka's defences and send a message of terror to the demon king.

Hanuman thought — 'I have found Mother Sita and delivered the Lord's message. Now let me test the might of these demons. Let me show them a glimpse of what awaits them when Shree Rama arrives.'

With supreme confidence born of devotion, Hanuman set about causing destruction in the Ashoka Vatika. He uprooted trees, scattered the gardens, and smashed the ornamental pavilions.

The demonesses fled in terror, screaming — 'A monkey is destroying the Ashoka garden! He is possessed by some terrible power! Call the guards! Call the soldiers!'

Ravana's guards rushed to the scene, but Hanuman dispatched them with ease. He wielded an iron pillar torn from a gateway and crushed every demon who dared approach him.

The noise of destruction reached Ravana's ears. The demon king was enraged — 'Who dares defile my sacred garden? Bring this insolent creature before me!'

Ravana sent his bravest warriors — Jambumali, Akshaya Kumar, and several mighty generals. One by one, Hanuman defeated and destroyed them all. The power of Shree Rama flowing through him was irresistible.

The demon warriors fell like insects before a flame. Hanuman, chanting 'Jai Shree Ram!' with every blow, was invincible. The gods in heaven watched in awe and showered flowers upon the mighty monkey.

Seeing his greatest warriors slain, Ravana grew alarmed. He sent his beloved son Akshaya Kumar, who was endowed with fearsome power. But even he fell before Hanuman's might.

When Ravana heard of Akshaya Kumar's death, his grief knew no bounds. In his rage, he summoned Meghnad (Indrajit), his mightiest son — 'Go and capture this monkey! Bring him to me alive!'

Indrajit, the conqueror of Indra himself, rode forth with his vast army. He employed the Brahmastra — the supreme divine weapon — knowing that Hanuman could not be defeated by ordinary means.

Hanuman, out of respect for Lord Brahma (the creator of the Brahmastra), allowed himself to be bound by the celestial weapon. Though he could have resisted, the devoted monkey chose to be captured — for he wished to meet Ravana face to face.

Hanuman thought — 'By allowing myself to be captured, I shall enter Ravana's court and deliver Shree Rama's message directly. Let the demon king hear the truth from the mouth of the Lord's messenger.'

The demons bound Hanuman with ropes (for the power of the Brahmastra is lost when mortal ropes are added) and dragged him through the streets of Lanka. But the mighty monkey walked with the dignity of a king, unafraid and serene.

Hanuman delivered Shree Rama's message with the authority of a divine ambassador — 'The Lord of the Raghus offers you one chance, O Ravana. Surrender Sita and bow before Him — and He shall spare your life.'

Hanuman said — 'Shree Rama is no ordinary mortal, O king. He is Vishnu incarnate — the same Lord who, as Vamana, measured the three worlds in three steps. Think carefully before you challenge Him.'

Ravana laughed scornfully — 'You speak of your Rama as though He were God! He is a banished prince, wandering in the forest with monkeys for an army. What can He do against the might of Lanka?'

Hanuman replied — 'O ten-headed one, your arrogance has blinded you. The same forest-dwelling prince destroyed fourteen thousand demons single-handedly. His name makes the three worlds tremble.'

Hanuman continued — 'Take the warning of a faithful servant. I have slain your greatest warriors with my bare hands — and I am merely a messenger. Imagine what the Lord Himself will do when He arrives.'

Ravana's brother Vibhishana also spoke — 'O brother, heed the monkey's words. He speaks the truth. Shree Rama is the Supreme Lord — to oppose Him is to invite certain destruction.'

But Ravana, blinded by pride, drove Vibhishana away with harsh words — 'You traitor! You side with the enemy! Get out of my sight!' Vibhishana left the court with a heavy heart.

Ravana then pronounced his judgment — 'Set this monkey's tail on fire and parade him through the streets of Lanka! Let all see what happens to those who defy the king of the demons!'

Hanuman smiled within his heart — for the Lord's plan was unfolding exactly as intended. The demons wrapped his tail in oil-soaked cloth and set it ablaze.

But Hanuman's tail could not be burned — for Sita had blessed him, and Agni, the fire-god, served the servant of Shree Rama. The flames blazed furiously but caused no pain to the mighty monkey.

The demons were astonished — the fire grew larger and larger, yet the monkey showed no sign of distress. Instead, Hanuman's eyes blazed with divine fury — the stage was set for Lanka Dahan.

Hanuman broke free from his bonds with a mighty roar that shook the foundations of Lanka. The ropes that bound him snapped like threads — the Son of the Wind was unstoppable.

With his burning tail, Hanuman leapt from rooftop to rooftop, setting fire to every palace, mansion, and tower in Lanka. The golden city began to burn in a magnificent conflagration.

Flames engulfed Ravana's personal palace, the grand assembly hall, the armouries, the treasuries, and the pleasure gardens. The fire raged through Lanka like the fire of cosmic dissolution.

The demons ran in every direction, screaming in terror. Their mighty city, which they had believed to be impregnable, was being reduced to ashes by a single monkey — the servant of Shree Rama.

Hanuman leapt from building to building with superhuman speed. His burning tail left a trail of fire — every structure it touched burst into flames. The night sky over Lanka glowed red.

Suddenly, Hanuman's heart was seized with anxiety — 'O no! In my zeal, I have set the entire city ablaze. What if the fire has reached the Ashoka grove where Mother Sita dwells?'

But then Hanuman calmed himself — 'The Lord protects His own. Mother Sita is under Shree Rama's divine protection. The fire that obeys me will not dare touch Her.'

Indeed, the Ashoka Vatika where Sita resided was untouched by the flames. A cool, fragrant breeze blew over the grove while all around it Lanka burned — such is the power of the Lord's protection.

The gods, gandharvas, and celestial beings watched from the heavens in wonder. They rained flowers upon Hanuman and sang — 'Glory to the servant of Shree Rama! Glory to the Son of the Wind!'

Having accomplished his purpose, Hanuman extinguished his tail in the ocean. He then returned to the Ashoka grove to take leave of Mother Sita before beginning his return journey.

Sita saw Hanuman approaching and Her heart was filled with joy. She said — 'O son, what you have accomplished is beyond the power of any ordinary being. Shree Rama's grace flows through you.'

Hanuman bowed at Sita's feet one final time. She blessed him with tears of love — 'May your journey be safe. Tell my Lord that I await Him with every breath. May He come soon.'

With Sita's blessings and Rama's ring safely secured, Hanuman ascended to the sky and began his return flight across the ocean. His heart was singing — 'Jai Shree Ram! Jai Shree Ram!'

Hanuman soared across the ocean with the speed of the wind itself. His massive form cut through the clouds — an invincible messenger returning triumphant from the enemy's stronghold.

The monkey warriors waiting on the southern shore saw a dark shape approaching across the sky. When they recognized Hanuman, they erupted in joyful cries — 'Hanuman has returned! He has found Mother Sita!'

Hanuman alighted upon the mountain slope where Angad, Jambavan, and the other monkeys waited. They rushed to embrace him — 'Tell us everything! What news of Mother Sita?'

Hanuman narrated the entire account — his crossing of the ocean, his entry into Lanka, his meeting with Sita, his battle with the demons, and the burning of Lanka. The monkeys listened in rapt wonder.

Jambavan said — 'O son of the Wind, what you have accomplished is truly without parallel. By the grace of Shree Rama, you have achieved what no one else could. Now let us return to the Lord with this joyful news.'

Angad embraced Hanuman and said — 'Brother, you are the pride of all monkeys! Your devotion to Shree Rama is the very ideal that we all strive to emulate. Let us hasten to the Lord!'

The entire monkey company set out northward with great joy, their hearts singing with hope. The news that Sita had been found was like the rising of the sun after a long and terrible night.

As the monkeys marched through the forest, they came upon the Madhuvana — the honey-grove belonging to Sugriva. In their exuberance, they entered the grove and feasted upon its honeycombs.

The guardian of the Madhuvana, an old monkey named Dadhimukh, tried to stop them. But the overjoyed warriors paid no heed — they drank honey, danced, and sang the praises of Shree Rama.

Dadhimukh rushed to Sugriva and complained — 'O king, your armies have plundered the Madhuvana! They are celebrating as though they have achieved some great victory!'

Sugriva's face lit up with joy — 'If the monkeys are celebrating in the Madhuvana, it means that Hanuman has succeeded! Sita has been found! Let them celebrate — this is the greatest news!'

Sugriva rushed to inform Shree Rama — 'O Lord, the monkeys are returning with joyful news! Hanuman has found Mother Sita!' Rama's eyes filled with tears of hope and gratitude.

The monkey army arrived at Kishkindha. At their head strode Hanuman, carrying Sita's Chudamani. He approached Shree Rama and prostrated himself at the Lord's lotus feet.

Hanuman said — 'O Lord, I have found Mother Sita. She is alive and well in Ravana's Ashoka Vatika. She endures every suffering with Your name upon Her lips. She sent this jewel as Her token.'

Shree Rama received the Chudamani and pressed it to His heart. Tears streamed from His divine eyes — 'O Sita! My beloved! You have endured so much suffering because of Me. I shall come for You.'

The Lord asked Hanuman to describe everything in detail. The faithful monkey recounted the entire narrative — Sita's condition, the strength of Lanka's fortifications, and Ravana's arrogant refusal to surrender.

Hanuman also told the Lord about Vibhishana — 'O Lord, Ravana's own brother Vibhishana is righteous and devoted. He counselled Ravana to return Sita, but was driven away. He would be a valuable ally.'

Shree Rama embraced Hanuman and said — 'O son of the Wind, what you have done for Me is beyond all repayment. You have given Me hope. You have given Sita hope. You are My most beloved servant.'

The Lord continued — 'Hanuman, all that I possess — My kingdom, My body, My very soul — are not sufficient to repay your service. I can only give you one thing — My eternal love.'

Hearing the Lord's words, Hanuman was overwhelmed with devotion. He said — 'O Lord, I desire nothing but Your feet. To serve You is my highest reward. Your love is all I seek.'

Shree Rama then addressed the entire assembly — 'The time for action has come. We shall march to Lanka, cross the ocean, and rescue Sita. Ravana's days are numbered.'

A great roar of approval rose from the monkey army — 'Jai Shree Ram! Victory to the Lord of the Raghus!' The earth trembled under the thunderous stomping of millions of monkey warriors.

Sugriva organized the vast monkey army for the march. Warriors streamed in from every mountain, forest, and valley — an army like no other, bound together by love for Shree Rama.

The march to the southern ocean began. Shree Rama led the way with Lakshmana at His side. Behind them stretched an army that covered the earth from horizon to horizon.

Trees bent under the weight of monkeys, rivers parted to let them pass, and mountains trembled at their approach. The army of Shree Rama was a force that even the gods had never witnessed before.

The mighty army reached the southern shore of the ocean. Before them lay the vast, restless sea — the final barrier between the Lord and His beloved Sita.

Shree Rama gazed upon the ocean and thought — 'How shall this vast army cross to Lanka? The ocean is deep and wide — we must find a way.'

Meanwhile, Vibhishana, Ravana's righteous brother, arrived at the Lord's camp. He had been driven from Lanka for speaking the truth and had come to seek refuge at Rama's feet.

Vibhishana approached Shree Rama with folded hands — 'O Lord of the Raghus, I have abandoned my brother who has abandoned dharma. I seek shelter at Your lotus feet. You are the refuge of all who are forsaken.'

Some of the monkey chiefs were suspicious — 'He is Ravana's brother! Perhaps he is a spy!' But Shree Rama said — 'Whoever comes to Me seeking refuge, I never turn away. This is My eternal vow.'

The Lord welcomed Vibhishana with open arms and crowned him the rightful king of Lanka — 'When Ravana is destroyed, you shall rule Lanka with dharma and justice.'

Vibhishana was overwhelmed with gratitude. He fell at the Lord's feet and wept — 'O Rama, You have given me everything — refuge, dignity, and a kingdom. I am Your servant for all eternity.'

Vibhishana then provided invaluable intelligence about Lanka's defences — the positions of the demon armies, their strengths and weaknesses, and the layout of the fortress.

Shree Rama said — 'Now we must cross this ocean. Let us request the ocean to make way — for the Lord respects all beings and seeks their cooperation before acting.'

The Lord sat upon the shore and prayed to Samudra (the ocean god) for three days, requesting passage. But the ocean remained silent — it did not respond to the Lord's humble request.

Lakshmana said — 'O brother, the ocean does not heed Your gentle request. Perhaps a different approach is needed.' But Shree Rama patiently waited — for the Lord always gives every being a chance to act rightly.

When the ocean god did not respond to three days of prayer, Shree Rama's divine anger was aroused. He took up His mighty bow and said — 'If the ocean will not yield, I shall dry it up with My fiery arrows.'

Lakshmana brought the Lord's great bow. Shree Rama strung it and drew an arrow that blazed with the fire of cosmic destruction. The three worlds trembled — even the gods grew afraid.

Seeing the terrible arrow aimed at him, the ocean god Samudra rose from the waters in fear. He appeared in a beautiful form, adorned with gems and corals, and prostrated before the Lord.

Samudra said — 'O Lord, forgive my delay! I was bound by my nature — I cannot alter my depth or breadth. But I have a solution — Nala and Neela among Your monkeys have a divine boon.'

The ocean god explained — 'Whatever Nala and Neela cast into my waters shall float and not sink. With their help, a bridge can be built across me. I shall support the stones they place.'

Shree Rama accepted the ocean's proposal and withdrew His terrible arrow. He redirected it towards the northern desert — even a divine arrow once drawn cannot return unused.

The construction of the bridge began immediately. Millions of monkeys gathered stones, boulders, trees, and mountains. Nala and Neela directed the work, and each stone they touched floated upon the water.

The monkeys chanted 'Jai Shree Ram!' as they worked. Every stone they placed bore the Lord's name inscribed upon it — and by the power of that holy name, the stones floated upon the ocean.

Day and night the work continued without rest. The monkey army laboured with the enthusiasm of devotees performing worship — for building the bridge was itself an act of service to the Lord.

In five days, the mighty bridge was complete — stretching a hundred yojanas across the ocean, broad and sturdy enough for the entire army to cross. It was named Rama Setu — the Bridge of Rama.

The gods watched from heaven in amazement. They said — 'Not since the churning of the cosmic ocean has such a feat been accomplished. The power of Rama's name transcends all the laws of nature.'

Shree Rama, with Lakshmana, Sugriva, Vibhishana, Hanuman, and the vast monkey army, crossed the ocean upon the bridge. The earth shook with the thunderous march of millions.

Lanka came into view — the golden city perched upon Mount Trikuta, its towers glinting in the sunlight. The monkey army beheld their enemy's stronghold and their blood sang for battle.

Shree Rama surveyed Lanka from a hilltop and said — 'The end of the demons draws near. Let us set up camp and prepare for the final battle. Ravana's time has come.'

The camp was established on the slopes of Mount Suvela. Shree Rama issued His commands — scouts were sent, strategies were planned, and the army was organized into divisions.

Angad was sent as an ambassador to Ravana's court with one final message — 'Surrender Sita and beg for Rama's mercy. This is your last chance, O Ravana.'

Angad entered Ravana's court with the fearlessness of one who serves the Lord. He delivered Rama's message, but Ravana laughed and said — 'I fear no one! Let your Rama come — I shall destroy him!'

Angad planted his foot upon the ground and challenged the demon court — 'If any demon can move my foot, I shall accept Ravana's strength. Otherwise, know that Rama's army is invincible.'

No demon could budge Angad's foot — not even Ravana himself. The prince of monkeys returned to the Lord's camp and reported — 'Ravana has refused all terms. War is now inevitable.'

The great battle of Lanka commenced with the blowing of conches and the beating of war drums. The monkey army surged forward like a mighty ocean, chanting 'Jai Shree Ram!' with deafening roars.

The demons poured out of Lanka's gates in vast numbers — chariots, elephants, horses, and foot soldiers darkened the earth. They were led by Ravana's mightiest commanders.

The two armies clashed with terrible force. The earth trembled, the sky darkened, and rivers of blood began to flow. Monkeys fought with trees and boulders, demons with weapons and sorcery.

Hanuman fought like ten thousand warriors. Every demon he struck was destroyed instantly. His roar shook Lanka's walls — 'Jai Shree Ram! Where is Ravana? Let the demon king face me!'

Lakshmana was struck by Indrajit's Shakti weapon and fell unconscious upon the battlefield. Hanuman rushed to his side — the army was plunged into despair at seeing the prince fallen.

The great physician Sushena said — 'The Sanjeevani herb from Mount Drongiri alone can save Lakshmana. But it must be brought before dawn — otherwise the prince will die.'

Without a moment's hesitation, Hanuman flew to the Himalayas. Unable to identify the specific herb in the darkness, he uprooted the entire mountain and carried it back to Lanka upon his palm.

The medicine was administered and Lakshmana revived. The army erupted in joy — 'Hanuman has saved our prince!' The Son of the Wind had accomplished yet another impossible feat.

The battle raged on for many days. One by one, Ravana's greatest warriors fell — Kumbhakarna, Meghnad (Indrajit), and countless demon generals. The forces of evil were being systematically destroyed.

Finally, Ravana himself entered the battlefield — the ten-headed lord of Lanka, wearing golden armour, riding a mighty chariot drawn by demon horses. The earth shook under his wheels.

Shree Rama faced Ravana upon the field of battle. The Supreme Lord and the demon king stood opposite each other — dharma versus adharma, light versus darkness, liberation versus bondage.

Again and again, Shree Rama severed Ravana's heads — but they grew back immediately. Vibhishana whispered to the Lord — 'O Rama, the secret of Ravana's life lies in the nectar within his navel.'

Shree Rama drew a mighty arrow — the Brahmastra, charged with the power of the entire universe. He aimed it at Ravana's navel, where the secret of his immortality resided.

The arrow flew with the speed of thought, blazing like the fire of cosmic dissolution. It pierced Ravana's navel, and the nectar of immortality was consumed by its flames.

Ravana's ten heads dropped. His mighty arms went limp. The lord of Lanka crashed to the earth like a mountain struck by Indra's thunderbolt. The three worlds shook at his fall.

At the moment of death, Ravana beheld the divine form of Shree Rama and attained liberation. Such is the Lord's mercy — even the enemy who falls by His hand receives the supreme destination.

The gods rained flowers from heaven. Celestial drums sounded. The earth was freed from the burden of demons. All creation rejoiced — 'Victory to Shree Rama! Dharma has triumphed!'

Mandodari, Ravana's queen, came to the battlefield and wept over her husband's body. Yet even she praised the Lord — 'Blessed is my husband, for he has died by the hand of God Himself.'

Shree Rama instructed Vibhishana to perform the funeral rites for Ravana with full honour — 'He was a great warrior and your brother. Honour him as a fallen king should be honoured.'

Vibhishana was crowned the king of Lanka according to the Lord's promise. He bowed at Rama's feet and said — 'O Lord, all that I am and all that I have is Yours. I shall rule Lanka in Your name.'

Then came the moment the three worlds had awaited — Shree Rama sent Hanuman to bring Sita from the Ashoka Vatika. The faithful messenger flew to the grove with joy overflowing from his heart.

Hanuman bowed at Sita's feet and said — 'Mother! Ravana is dead! Shree Rama has won! Come, the Lord awaits You!' Sita's eyes overflowed with tears of joy — 'At last! At last!'

Sita was reunited with Shree Rama. The divine couple beheld each other after the long, terrible separation — and the universe itself seemed to sigh with relief and joy.

Shree Rama placed Sita upon His chariot and prepared for the return to Ayodhya. The fourteen years of exile were nearly complete — the Lord's mission was accomplished.

Shree Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana ascended the Pushpaka Vimana. With them came Sugriva, Hanuman, Vibhishana, and all the faithful monkeys who had fought in the great battle.

The Pushpaka Vimana soared into the sky, heading north towards Ayodhya. Below them spread the vast ocean, the forests, and the rivers — all of creation celebrating the Lord's victory.

Shree Rama pointed out the places of significance to Sita — 'There is the bridge we built across the ocean. There is Kishkindha, where Sugriva rules. There is Chitrakoot, where Bharat awaited us.'

As they flew over the Ganga, the monkeys and Vibhishana saluted the sacred river. Shree Rama smiled — for soon, very soon, He would see His beloved Ayodhya again.

A message was sent ahead to Bharat at Nandigram — 'The Lord returns! Shree Rama comes home!' When Bharat heard these words, his joy was boundless — the fourteen years of separation were over.

Bharat had counted every day of the exile. He had worn bark garments, eaten the simplest food, and worshipped Rama's sandals daily on the throne. Now, at last, his beloved brother was returning.

The entire city of Ayodhya mobilized for the welcome. Streets were cleaned, houses decorated, flowers scattered everywhere. The people sang and danced — 'Rama is coming home! Our Lord returns!'

The Pushpaka Vimana descended upon Nandigram. Bharat, seeing the divine chariot, ran forward with arms outstretched, crying — 'Rama! O my brother!' Tears of fourteen years poured forth.

The reunion of Rama and Bharat was the most beautiful sight the worlds had ever witnessed. The brothers embraced with such love that even the gods wept tears of joy.

Shree Rama touched the feet of His mothers. Kausalya, Sumitra, and even Kaikeyi blessed Him with overflowing hearts. The Lord had fulfilled His father's word and returned victorious.

Bharat brought forth the sacred sandals — 'O Lord, I return Your padukas. The kingdom is Yours. I was merely their guardian — now take Your rightful place upon the throne.'

Shree Rama embraced Bharat again and said — 'Dear brother, your devotion has no equal in all the three worlds. You are the very definition of what it means to love God.'

The coronation of Shree Rama was performed by Guru Vashishtha with full Vedic rites. The Lord ascended the throne of Ayodhya — and Rama Rajya, the kingdom of perfect dharma, began.

In the kingdom of Shree Rama, all people were happy and prosperous. There was no sickness, no poverty, no injustice. The rains came on time, the harvests were plentiful, and dharma reigned supreme.

Men and women of all stations loved one another and fulfilled their respective duties. The Brahmins studied the Vedas, the Kshatriyas protected the people, the Vaishyas traded honestly, and the Shudras served with devotion.

No creature feared another. The lion and the deer drank from the same stream. Even the elements of nature collaborated harmoniously — such was the divine influence of Rama's rule.

The earth yielded her treasures willingly, the trees bore fruit in abundance, and the cows gave milk without being milked. Poverty and want were memories of a forgotten age.

Sita and Rama ruled together with equal grace. The divine queen was the very embodiment of compassion and wisdom — She tempered the Lord's justice with Her infinite mercy.

Children played in the streets without fear. The elderly were honoured and cared for. No one spoke a harsh word to another — for in Rama's kingdom, love was the only law.

The fame of Rama Rajya spread to all the three worlds. Even the gods in heaven said — 'The earth surpasses our paradise under Rama's rule. Blessed are those who live in His kingdom.'

Shree Rama performed the Ashwamedha Yajna and other great sacrifices, distributing wealth to Brahmins and the poor. He ruled with perfect impartiality — never favouring one person over another.

Hanuman remained ever at the Lord's side — His most faithful servant, His most devoted monk, His most powerful protector. Where Rama was, Hanuman was — inseparable for all eternity.

The Lord held great assemblies where He discussed dharma, sang devotional hymns, and told stories from the scriptures. His words were nectar to the ears of every listener.

Sita bore two sons — Lava and Kusha — who were the very images of their divine parents. They grew up as princes of the Raghu dynasty, brave, wise, and devoted to dharma.

The sages came to Ayodhya and were amazed by the peace and prosperity they beheld. They said — 'This is not a mortal kingdom — this is Vaikuntha (heaven) descended upon the earth.'

Shree Rama treated every citizen as His own child. He listened to their joys and sorrows with equal attention, resolving every dispute with wisdom that flowed from His divine nature.

Years passed like beautiful dreams. The people of Ayodhya grew old in happiness and died in peace, always with the name of Shree Rama upon their lips. Death held no terror in Rama's kingdom.

Tulsidas says — the glory of Rama Rajya is beyond the power of words to describe. It is the ideal to which all humanity should aspire — a world governed by love, truth, and devotion.

The Sundar Kand teaches us that no obstacle is too great when the Lord's name is on our lips. Hanuman crossed the ocean, found Sita, burned Lanka, and returned victorious — all by the power of 'Rama.'

It teaches us that devotion is the mightiest force in creation. Neither strength, nor wealth, nor knowledge can compare with pure, selfless love for God. Hanuman is the living proof of this eternal truth.

It teaches us that the Lord protects those who surrender to Him. Vibhishana abandoned everything for the sake of truth and was rewarded with a kingdom. Faith in Rama is never in vain.

It teaches us that evil, however powerful, must eventually perish before righteousness. Ravana, with all his might and sorcery, fell before the arrows of Shree Rama — dharma is always victorious.

The Sundar Kand is prescribed for daily recitation by devotees. It brings peace to the troubled mind, health to the sick body, and liberation to the seeking soul. Its power is infinite and inexhaustible.

Whoever reads or hears the Sundar Kand with faith and devotion — all their sorrows are destroyed, all their desires fulfilled, and they attain the grace of Shree Rama.

The story of Hanuman's journey to Lanka is the story of every soul's journey to God. We must cross the ocean of worldly existence, overcome the demons of desire and ignorance, and find the Lord dwelling within our own hearts.

Goswami Tulsidas, the blessed poet-saint, composed this Kand with trembling hands and tears of devotion. Every word was written under the direct inspiration of Shree Rama's grace.

The Sundar Kand is called 'Sundar' (beautiful) because it is the most beautiful portion of the most beautiful scripture. It contains the essence of devotion, wisdom, and divine love.

In the Kaliyuga, there is no spiritual practice more powerful than the chanting of Rama's name and the reading of the Sundar Kand. It is the unfailing remedy for all the ills of this dark age.

Lord Shiva Himself declared to Parvati — 'O Girija, the Sundar Kand is supremely sacred. Those who read it with devotion are dear to Me and dear to Shree Rama.'

The Sundar Kand removes all obstacles — physical, mental, and spiritual. It destroys fear, dispels doubt, and fills the heart with the unshakeable peace that comes from surrendering to the Lord.

Those who are afflicted by Saturn, Rahu, or other planetary malefics find immediate relief by reading the Sundar Kand. The Lord's name is more powerful than any astrological remedy.

Married couples who read the Sundar Kand together find their relationship strengthened and blessed. For Sita and Rama's reunion is the very symbol of conjugal love perfected through devotion.

Students, seekers, and travellers who read the Sundar Kand before undertaking any enterprise find success in all their endeavours. Hanuman's journey teaches us that no mission is impossible with Rama's grace.

The Sundar Kand concludes with the triumphant return of Hanuman and the preparation for the final battle against Lanka. It is the bridge between hope and fulfilment, between exile and homecoming.

Thus the fifth and most beautiful staircase (Sopaan) of the Shree Ramcharitmanas — the sacred lake of Rama's divine deeds, the destroyer of all the sins of the Kali age — known as the Sundar Kand, draws to its blessed conclusion.

Aarti of the Shree Ramayan — I wave the lamp of devotion before the sacred scripture. The Ramcharitmanas is the very image of Shree Rama — whoever worships it worships the Lord Himself.

The seven Kands of the Ramcharitmanas are the seven steps leading to the Lord's supreme abode. Each Kand is a jewel — together they form the most precious necklace in all of spiritual literature.

I offer this Aarti with camphor, incense, flowers, and the flames of pure devotion. May the Ramayan accept my humble offering and bestow its infinite grace upon all who hear its sacred verses.

Glory to the Shree Ramcharitmanas! Glory to Goswami Tulsidas! Glory to Shree Sita-Rama! May the reading of this Sundar Kand bring peace, prosperity, and liberation to all beings in all the three worlds.
