Sundar Kand Verse 340
प्रभु भल कीन्ही मोहि सिख दीन्ही। मरजादा पुनि तुम्हरी कीन्ही॥ ढोल गवाँर सूद्र पसु नारी। सकल ताड़ना के अधिकारी॥३॥
prabhu bhala kīnhī mohi sikha dīnhī| marajādā puni tumharī kīnhī|| ḍhola gavā~ra sūdra pasu nārī| sakala tāḍa़nā ke adhikārī||3||

The ocean said — O Lord, you did well to instruct me; the very bounds of conduct are of your own making. (Then, excusing its own inertness and likening itself to insentient things, the ocean adds —) 'a drum, a rustic, a beast and such are said to need firm handling.' [These are the ocean's own self-humbling words, explaining why it stirred only at Rama's forceful rebuke; this much-debated medieval line is given here in its dramatic context, not as doctrine.]
समुद्र ने कहा — हे प्रभु! आपने जो मुझे शिक्षा दी, अच्छा ही किया; मर्यादा भी आप ही की स्थापित की हुई है। (तब समुद्र अपनी जड़ता का औचित्य देते हुए, स्वयं को इन्हीं जड़ वस्तुओं के समान बताकर कहता है —) ढोल, गँवार, शूद्र, पशु और नारी — ये सब ताड़ना (देख-रेख व समझाने) के योग्य कहे गए हैं; अर्थात् समुद्र स्वयं को भी ऐसी ही जड़-वस्तु मानता है जो बल या भय से ही चेतती है।
