Sumant & Sushila — Why the Vrat Cannot Be Abandoned
Per the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Sumant married Sushila (daughter of Sage Sumantu). After Sushila's mother died, her stepmother Karkasha (cruel) drove the couple into poverty. While bathing on Yamuna's bank, Sushila saw women observing Anant Vrat. She joined them, took the Ananta Sutra, and the family soon became prosperous.
But Sumant, intoxicated by sudden wealth, grew arrogant. He spotted the Ananta Sutra on Sushila's wrist, mocked it as 'mere thread', and in rage cut and burnt it. Within days, every blessing reversed — wealth vanished, illness struck, ancestors withdrew protection.
Sumant wandered for years seeking forgiveness. Vishnu appeared in disguise as an old brahmin and instructed him to observe Anant Vrat for 14 consecutive years (one for each loka). Sumant followed; his wealth, health and dignity were restored. The lesson: once the Ananta Sutra is accepted, the vrat is binding for life. Never disrespect or break the thread.
सुमंत और सुशीला — व्रत त्याग का दुष्परिणाम
ब्रह्मवैवर्त पुराण के अनुसार सुमंत ने सुशीला (ऋषि सुमंतु की पुत्री) से विवाह किया। माता के देहांत के बाद विमाता कर्कशा ने दम्पति को निर्धन कर दिया। यमुना तट पर स्नान करते समय सुशीला ने अनंत-व्रत करती स्त्रियाँ देखीं। उनसे सीख कर उसने अनंत-सूत्र धारण किया — शीघ्र ही परिवार समृद्ध हो गया।
अकस्मात धन से सुमंत अहंकारी हो गया। पत्नी की कलाई पर अनंत-सूत्र देख उसने 'मात्र धागा' कह कर हँसी उड़ाई, और क्रोध में काट कर जला दिया। कुछ ही दिनों में सब आशीर्वाद उलट गए — धन गया, रोग आया, पितरों ने रक्षा त्याग दी।
सुमंत वर्षों भटकता रहा। विष्णु वृद्ध-ब्राह्मण वेश में प्रकट हुए और 14 निरंतर वर्ष (प्रत्येक लोक हेतु) अनंत-व्रत करने का आदेश दिया। सुमंत ने पालन किया; धन, स्वास्थ्य, सम्मान पुनः लौटे। शिक्षा: एक बार अनंत-सूत्र स्वीकार करने के बाद व्रत आजीवन है। सूत्र का अनादर या तोड़ना घोर पाप।
