Why Offer 21 Durva to Ganesha?
Durva (doob grass) is Ganesha's most beloved offering. Where other deities are pleased with flowers, Ganesha is pleased by simple green durva — and the tradition is to offer twenty-one blades.
The Analasura Katha — Why Durva Became Dear
According to the katha of the Ganesha Purana, a fire-demon named Analasura terrorised the three worlds; the flames from his eyes burnt everything they touched. At the gods' plea the child Ganesha swallowed the demon whole.
An unbearable burning then rose in Ganesha's belly — neither the moon, nor Ganga water, nor lotuses could cool it. The sages placed twenty-one blades of durva on his head, and the burning subsided at once.
Pleased, Ganesha granted that whoever offers him durva earns the merit of a thousand yajnas.
What Durva and the Number 21 Stand For
- Durva stands for coolness — it soothed the burning within Ganesha (the Analasura katha).
- It symbolises humility and resilience — it lies low on the ground yet never dies, sprouting again and again.
- The number 21 is read as the five senses, five organs of action, five pranas, five elements and the one mind — a symbol of complete surrender.
- Twenty-one is dear to Ganesha — 21 durva, 21 modaks and 21 kinds of leaves (patri puja) are all part of his worship.
The Ten Names Chanted While Offering Durva
By tradition ten pairs of durva are offered with these ten names and the final single blade with "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah" — twenty-one in all.
How to Pick and Offer Durva
- Pick fresh, tender green durva from a clean spot — blades with three or five leaflets are considered best.
- Wash it and make a bundle of 21 blades, or ten pairs of two blades plus one — twenty-one in all.
- Chant one of Ganesha's ten names (above) with each pair; offer the last blade with "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah".
- Place the durva on Ganesha's head or feet, tips pointing towards him, never root first.
- Offering 21 durva on Wednesdays, Chaturthi tithis and Ganesh Chaturthi is held especially fruitful.
What to Avoid
- Do not offer dry, yellowed, insect-eaten durva, or grass from an unclean place
- Do not offer it unwashed or without a sankalp
- Do not offer Tulsi leaves to Ganesha — Tulsi is held forbidden for him except on Ganesh Chaturthi
Benefits of Offering Durva
- Removal of obstacles and success in undertakings
- Peace of mind and control over anger — the cooling quality of durva
- Wednesday durva worship is believed to aid intellect and business
