In Shiva worship, avoiding a few forbidden items matters as much as the right offerings — scripture prohibits these on the Shivling:
Belpatra (Bilva Leaf) Offering Rules
- An unbroken 3-joined-leaf bilva — not torn or with holes
- Place the smooth side facing the Shivling (offered inverted)
- Washed with water, offered in counts of 3, 5, 7, 11, 21 or 108
- Do not pluck on Monday, Chaturdashi, Sankranti or Amavasya — pluck a day earlier
- A bilva leaf may be washed and re-offered (it is not considered stale)
Sawan 2026 Abhishekam — Shiva's Favourite Month
Performing Shiva Abhishekam on the Sawan Mondays (Shravan 2026: 30 July–28 August; Mondays 3, 10, 17, 24 Aug) is held especially fruitful — Shravan is Lord Shiva's most beloved month. Panchamrit abhishek is the most potent offering.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I offer in Shiva abhishek?
Bathe the Shivling in sequence with water, raw milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar (Panchamrit), each round with 'Om Namah Shivaya', then offer 3-leaf bilvapatra, white flowers, dhatura and chandan. Avoid turmeric, kumkum and ketaki flower.
Milk or honey — which abhishek is better?
The combined Panchamrit is supreme. Milk alone suits mental and physical healing; honey alone suits speech, business and communication.
When is the best time for Shiva abhishek in 2026?
Brahma Muhurat (early morning) and Pradosh Kaal (evening) are best. The Sawan Mondays — 3, 10, 17, 24 August 2026 — and Sawan Shivratri (11 August) are the most auspicious days of the year for it.
What should you NOT offer on a Shivling?
Do not offer Tulsi (dear to Vishnu, per the Jalandhar–Vrinda legend), Ketki flower, turmeric (haldi) or kumkum/sindoor, coconut water, or conch (shankh) water. Use sandalwood or bhasma in place of haldi/kumkum.
What is the correct way to offer belpatra (bilva leaf)?
Offer an unbroken 3-joined-leaf bilva with the smooth side facing the Shivling (inverted), washed with water, in counts of 3, 5, 7, 11, 21 or 108. Avoid torn or hole-ridden leaves, and do not pluck bilva on Monday, Chaturdashi, Sankranti or Amavasya — pluck a day earlier.
