A tithi begins and ends at the same instant everywhere on Earth — only your local clock reading differs. That is why the same tithi can fall on the previous or the next calendar day where you live, even though the festival date on this page follows the Vedic Panchang, IST.
Classical observance windows — sunrise, midday, afternoon, evening and midnight — are defined by your own sunrise and sunset, not by India's. The table below gives those local values for the major diaspora cities.

- Begin the day with sankalp and short prayer.
- Follow family tradition with devotion.
- Conclude with gratitude, prasad, and positive resolve.
Frequently Asked Questions
On which date does Sankashti Chaturthi fall in the Chaitra month in 2026?
Sankashti Chaturthi (Chaitra) falls on March 6, 2026, on the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi of the Chaitra month. Chaitra is the first month of the Hindu new year — making this the opening Sankashti of the new year calendar, giving it special significance for auspicious new beginnings.
Why is Durva grass so important in Chaitra Sankashti Chaturthi puja?
Durva (Cynodon dactylon) is Ganesha's most beloved offering — offering 21 durva blades is considered more pleasing to him than gold or gems, per Ganesha Purana tradition. In Chaitra, nature freshly regenerates, making freshly cut spring durva especially pure and appropriate for this vrat.
Can wish fulfilment prayers be made specifically on Chaitra Sankashti?
Yes — Sankashti Chaturthi in any month is dedicated to Sankata Mochana Ganesha (remover of distress). Devotees make specific sankalpa (vow) at sunrise, stating their wish, and complete 4, 8, or 16 consecutive Sankashti fasts for its fulfilment. Chaitra being the year's first month is especially auspicious for new wishes.
Is the moonrise timing for Sankashti the same across all cities in India?
No — moonrise time varies by geographic location. Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata each see the moon 15–30 minutes apart. Devotees must verify their city's moonrise time from the local Vedic Panchang. The fast must be broken only after the moon is sighted at the observer's specific location.
