Per Varaha Purana, during Samudra Manthan the asuras seized the amrita-kalash. To recover it, Vishnu assumed the form of Mohini — an enchantress of unsurpassed beauty. She distributed nectar only to the devas; the asuras were captivated and lost their share.
Lord Vishnu later narrated to Yudhishthira: 'Whoever observes Mohini Ekadashi obtains freedom from delusion (moha) — the binding force behind debt, addiction, and entanglement. Just as Mohini freed the devas from the asura threat, this vrat frees the devotee from karmic moha.'
