A tithi begins and ends at the same instant everywhere on Earth — only your local clock reading differs. That is why the same tithi can fall on the previous or the next calendar day where you live, even though the festival date on this page follows the Vedic Panchang, IST.
Classical observance windows — sunrise, midday, afternoon, evening and midnight — are defined by your own sunrise and sunset, not by India's. The table below gives those local values for the major diaspora cities.

- Begin the day with sankalp and short prayer.
- Follow family tradition with devotion.
- Conclude with gratitude, prasad, and positive resolve.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Margashirsha considered an auspicious month for Shiva worship?
In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna declares Margashirsha to be His own among months. This sanctity extends to Shiva worship as well — the cool post-monsoon climate and the energy of the month make it ideal for deep meditation and devotional practices.
Is this Masik Shivratri in December linked to any year-end spiritual significance?
Yes. Margashirsha Masik Shivratri often falls near the year's end, and many devotees use it as an occasion for introspection and seeking Shiva's blessings for the coming year. Rudra Abhishek with prayers for renewal is a common practice.
What is the ideal night vigil practice for Margashirsha Masik Shivratri?
Devotees stay awake chanting 'Om Namah Shivaya' and reciting hymns such as Shiva Tandava Stotram, Shiva Ashtakam, or passages from the Shiva Purana. Four-prahar puja — performing Shiva worship at each of the four night-watches — is the classical observance.
Which Shiva mantra is most recited during Masik Shivratri worship?
The Panchakshara mantra 'Om Namah Shivaya' is the primary mantra — recited 108 times or more during Abhishek and throughout the night vigil. The Mahamrityunjaya mantra is also commonly chanted for health, protection, and liberation.
