Kanwar Yatra is the great Shravan pilgrimage in which devotees (Kanwariyas) carry Ganga-jal on foot — often barefoot, chanting 'Bol Bam' — from sacred sources to their local Shiva temple, pouring abhishek on the Shivling. Why Kanwariyas Carry Ganga-jal
Per the Shiva Purana, at the Samudra Manthan in Shravana the Halahala poison arose; Shiva drank it to save creation and became Neelkanth. To cool the burning, the devas poured Ganga-jal over him continuously.
The Kanwar Yatra recreates this act of cooling devotion — carrying sacred water to abhishek the Shivling — which is why Shravana, the month of water, is Shiva's most beloved month.

शिव पुराण के अनुसार श्रावण में समुद्र-मंथन के समय हलाहल विष प्रकट हुआ; शिव ने सृष्टि-रक्षा हेतु उसे पीकर नीलकंठ बने। ताप शांत करने को देवताओं ने उन पर अनवरत गंगाजल बहाया।
कांवड़ यात्रा इसी शीतल भक्ति का पुनर्निर्माण है — पवित्र जल लाकर शिवलिंग का अभिषेक — इसीलिए श्रावण, जल का मास, शिव का सर्वप्रिय मास है।
