Harishchandra's Restoration — Brahmavaivarta Puranaहरिश्चंद्र की पुनः-प्राप्ति — ब्रह्मवैवर्त पुराण
Per Brahmavaivarta Purana, King Harishchandra — celebrated for absolute truthfulness — was tested by sage Vishwamitra. He lost his kingdom, was separated from queen Taramati and son Rohit, and was sold to a Chandala (cremation-ground keeper). Even there he refused to lie. His son Rohit died from a snake-bite; Taramati came as a poor woman to cremate him, and Harishchandra demanded the cremation fee as duty.
Sage Gautama appeared and instructed Harishchandra to observe Aja Ekadashi. He did so with absolute devotion. Lord Vishnu Himself appeared, restored Rohit to life, returned Harishchandra to his kingdom, and reunited the family. The vrat is hence the prescribed remedy for anyone facing extreme karmic ordeal.
ब्रह्मवैवर्त पुराण के अनुसार राजा हरिश्चंद्र — पूर्ण सत्यवादिता हेतु विख्यात — की परीक्षा ऋषि विश्वामित्र ने ली। उन्होंने राज्य गँवाया, रानी तारामती और पुत्र रोहित से वियोग हुआ, और एक चांडाल (श्मशान-रक्षक) को बेच दिए गए। वहाँ भी उन्होंने असत्य नहीं बोला। पुत्र रोहित सर्प-दंश से मर गया; तारामती निर्धन रूप में अंत्येष्टि करने आई, और हरिश्चंद्र ने कर्तव्य-रूप में अंत्येष्टि-शुल्क माँगा।
ऋषि गौतम प्रकट हुए और हरिश्चंद्र को अज एकादशी का व्रत बताया। उन्होंने पूर्ण भक्ति से किया। स्वयं भगवान विष्णु प्रकट हुए, रोहित को पुनर्जीवित किया, हरिश्चंद्र को राज्य लौटाया और परिवार को मिलाया। अतः यह व्रत किसी भी कठोर कर्म-संकट का निर्धारित उपाय है।
