About this festival
Indira Ekadashi (6 Oct 2026) falls on Ashwina Krishna Ekadashi — squarely in the middle of Pitru Paksha (the fortnight of ancestor reverence). Per Padma Purana, the merit of this Ekadashi can liberate ancestors stuck in lower realms. King Indrasena observed it to free his father, King Aindrasena, from naraka (hell). The vrat is the most powerful pitru-tarpan Ekadashi of the year.

A tithi begins and ends at the same instant everywhere on Earth — only your local clock reading differs. That is why the same tithi can fall on the previous or the next calendar day where you live, even though the festival date on this page follows the Vedic Panchang, IST.
Classical observance windows — sunrise, midday, afternoon, evening and midnight — are defined by your own sunrise and sunset, not by India's. The table below gives those local values for the major diaspora cities.

King Indrasena's Liberation of His Father — Padma Purana
Per Padma Purana, King Indrasena of Mahishmati received a visit from Sage Narada. Narada said: 'Your dead father Aindrasena is suffering in naraka — his soul saw me passing by and begged for help.' Indrasena was shocked — his father had been a virtuous king. Narada explained: 'A single Ekadashi he broke in youth — that small lapse keeps him in lower regions.'
Narada prescribed Ashwina Krishna Ekadashi vrat with the merit dedicated to Aindrasena. Indrasena observed it scrupulously. At sunrise on Dwadashi, a celestial vehicle descended; Aindrasena rose to Vishnu's abode. Hence: Indira Ekadashi is the single most-prescribed pitru-mokshana vrat in Hindu calendar.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Indira Ekadashi considered the most powerful pitru-mokshana Ekadashi of the year?
Indira Ekadashi falls within Pitru Paksha — the fortnight entirely dedicated to ancestor reverence. Per the Padma Purana, the vrat's merit can liberate ancestors stuck in lower realms. No other Ekadashi combines both Vishnu-puja merit and direct pitru-liberation in a single vrat, making it uniquely powerful in this season.
What did sage Narada reveal to King Indrasena that led to this Ekadashi being named after him?
Per the Padma Purana, Narada told King Indrasena that his virtuous father Aindrasena was suffering in naraka because of a single Ekadashi he had inadvertently broken in youth. Narada prescribed Ashwina Krishna Ekadashi with its merit dedicated to the father. Indrasena followed it; Aindrasena rose to Vishnu's abode. The festival carries Indrasena's name as the devotee-hero of the story.
Is it possible to observe Indira Ekadashi and the regular Pitru Paksha shraddha on the same day?
Yes, and it is especially encouraged. On Dashami (the day before), morning tarpan and pinda-dana for ancestors is performed as part of Pitru Paksha. On Ekadashi, the full Vishnu-puja and fast are observed with the explicit sankalp of dedicating the vrat's merit to ancestors. The Padma Purana approves this combined observance.
What is the role of the Peepal tree on Indira Ekadashi evening?
In the tradition associated with Indira Ekadashi and Pitru Paksha broadly, lighting a sesame-oil diya at a Peepal tree at dusk is prescribed. The Peepal tree is considered an abode of ancestors and devas. The lamp symbolically illuminates the path for ancestral souls and invites them to receive the vrat's merit.
