About this festival
Narasimha Jayanti (30 Apr 2026) falls on Vaishakh Shukla Chaturdashi — the day Lord Vishnu's 4th avatar emerged from a pillar at twilight (neither day nor night) to slay the demon-king Hiranyakashipu and protect his child-devotee Prahlada. Per Bhagavata Purana, Skandha 7, the puja muhurta is Sandhya Kaal (dusk) — the exact moment Narasimha appeared. The Narasimha Kavacham (Brahma-yamala Tantra) is the supreme protection mantra recited on this day for shield against enemies, sorcery, and Rahu-Ketu afflictions.

A tithi begins and ends at the same instant everywhere on Earth — only your local clock reading differs. That is why the same tithi can fall on the previous or the next calendar day where you live, even though the festival date on this page follows the Vedic Panchang, IST.
Classical observance windows — sunrise, midday, afternoon, evening and midnight — are defined by your own sunrise and sunset, not by India's. The table below gives those local values for the major diaspora cities.

Hiranyakashipu's End — Bhagavata Purana Skandha 7
Per Bhagavata Purana (Skandha 7, Ch 1-10), Hiranyakashipu — Prahlada's father — obtained from Brahma a boon of near-invincibility: death by neither man nor beast, not by day or night, not indoors or outdoors, not by weapon, not on earth or in the sky. Empowered, he declared himself God and tortured his Vishnu-devotee son Prahlada.
When Hiranyakashipu, in fury, kicked a pillar in his palace at dusk demanding to know where Prahlada's God was, Lord Vishnu burst forth from the pillar as Narasimha — half-man half-lion (neither man nor beast), at twilight (neither day nor night), on the doorstep (neither indoor nor outdoor), placed Hiranyakashipu on his thighs (neither earth nor sky), and tore him apart with his claws (no weapon). The boon's conditions were perfectly circumvented. Prahlada was saved; Narasimha is therefore the supreme symbol of impossible protection — when ordinary remedies fail, Narasimha's grace breaks the pattern.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the main puja for Narasimha Jayanti performed at dusk rather than in the morning?
Bhagavata Purana (Skandha 7) specifies that Narasimha burst forth from the pillar at Sandhya Kaal — twilight, neither day nor night. To honour the exact moment of his appearance, the principal puja is timed to coincide with dusk. Morning worship is permitted but Sandhya Kaal (around 6:48–7:32 PM) is the prescribed appearance window.
How did Hiranyakashipu's boon fail against Narasimha — what were its conditions?
Hiranyakashipu's boon from Brahma: death by neither man nor beast, not day or night, not indoors or outdoors, not by weapon, not on earth or sky. Narasimha appeared as half-man half-lion at twilight, on the doorstep, placed Hiranyakashipu on his thighs, and used his claws — every condition fulfilled in reverse.
What are the key offerings and which flower is specifically prescribed for Narasimha?
Red hibiscus flowers are especially prescribed for Narasimha puja. Raw turmeric (a pinch is also added to the bath water), jaggery with coconut, and panchamrit complete the offering. Donating yellow cloth, raw turmeric, and jaggery to four Brahmins is the accompanying dana prescribed for this Jayanti.
What is the Narasimha Kavacham and why is it recited on this day?
Narasimha Kavacham from the Brahma-yamala Tantra is a Sanskrit protective shield prayer listing Narasimha's fierce epithets and invoking his protection on all eight directions, above and below. It is recited on Narasimha Jayanti specifically to create a spiritual shield against enemies, evil eye, sorcery, and Rahu-Ketu afflictions — areas where Narasimha is the presiding force.
