Kurma Avatar — Samudra Manthan
Per Bhagavata Purana (Skandha 8, Ch 6-7), when the devas and asuras began churning the ocean of milk (Kshira Sagara) using Mount Mandara as the churning rod and Vasuki the serpent as the rope, the mountain began to sink into the ocean. Vishnu took the form of a giant tortoise (Kurma) and dove beneath Mount Mandara, holding it on his back so the churning could continue.
This 'second avatar' (after Matsya) made possible the recovery of 14 ratnas including amrita, Lakshmi, Kamadhenu, Airavata, and Dhanvantari. Vaishakha Purnima is celebrated as the day Vishnu first took this Kurma form. The tortoise is a symbol of steady support, patience, and bearing weight without complaint — virtues every devotee is enjoined to cultivate by observing this Purnima.
कूर्म अवतार — समुद्र मंथन
भागवत पुराण (स्कंध 8, अध्याय 6-7) के अनुसार जब देव-असुरों ने मन्दार पर्वत को मथनी और वासुकि सर्प को रस्सी बनाकर क्षीर सागर का मंथन प्रारम्भ किया, तो पर्वत समुद्र में डूबने लगा। विष्णु ने विशाल कछुए (कूर्म) का रूप धारण किया और मन्दार पर्वत के नीचे गोता लगाकर उसे अपनी पीठ पर धारण किया — ताकि मंथन जारी रह सके।
इस 'द्वितीय अवतार' (मत्स्य के बाद) से ही 14 रत्नों की प्राप्ति सम्भव हुई — अमृत, लक्ष्मी, कामधेनु, ऐरावत, धन्वंतरि आदि। वैशाख पूर्णिमा को वह दिन माना जाता है जब विष्णु ने पहली बार कूर्म रूप लिया। कछुआ निरंतर सहारा, धैर्य और बिना शिकायत भार वहन का प्रतीक है — हर भक्त को इस पूर्णिमा का पालन कर इन गुणों का विकास करने को कहा गया है।
