About this festival
Kati Bihu (18 Oct 2026) — also called Kongali Bihu (Kongali = poor, sombre) — is Assam's most subdued of the three Bihus. It falls on Kati Sankranti (sun enters Tula/Libra). The granary is low (post-monsoon, pre-harvest), so the festival is solemn — earthen diyas (Akash Bonti) are lit on tall bamboo poles in fields and tulsi-courtyards to honour ancestors and pray for the upcoming Aghon paddy harvest. No feast; simple food only.

A tithi begins and ends at the same instant everywhere on Earth — only your local clock reading differs. That is why the same tithi can fall on the previous or the next calendar day where you live, even though the festival date on this page follows the Vedic Panchang, IST.
Classical observance windows — sunrise, midday, afternoon, evening and midnight — are defined by your own sunrise and sunset, not by India's. The table below gives those local values for the major diaspora cities.

Why Kati Bihu is Solemn
Kati (also Aswini-Aghon transition) is the most agricultural-uncertain time in the Brahmaputra valley. The summer paddy is finished; the Aghon harvest is still growing — vulnerable to flooding, pests, and frost. Granaries are lowest. Farmers historically prayed at the field's edge for the crop to survive.
The Akash Bonti's deeper meaning: the high-up diya is visible from far — meant to symbolically guide ancestors' departing souls back to the family fields, AND to act as a beacon for paddy-pest deterrence (insects fly towards the light, away from rice). Practical wisdom + spiritual frame combined. Kongali (sombre) reflects the actual food-scarcity period — sweets feel inappropriate when granaries are nearly empty.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is Kati Bihu observed and what determines its date?
Kati Bihu falls on Kati Sankranti — the day the sun enters Tula (Libra) on the Assamese solar calendar, corresponding to mid-October. In 2026 this falls on 18 October. Unlike Bohag Bihu (New Year), its date follows the solar transit, not a lunar tithi.
Why is Kati Bihu called Kongali (poor) Bihu and why is there no feast?
Post-monsoon, the summer paddy is exhausted and the Aghon harvest is still growing in the field. Granaries are at their lowest. Feasting is considered inappropriate when food stocks are scarce, so this Bihu is intentionally sober — simple rice-dal meals only, no sweets or meat.
What is Akash Bonti and why is it lit on a tall bamboo pole?
Akash Bonti is an earthen lamp (diya) lashed to the top of a 6–8 foot bamboo pole and lit at sunset. It serves two purposes: spiritually it guides ancestral souls back to the family fields; practically its height attracts insects away from the rice crop — traditional ecological wisdom encoded in ritual.
Who are the ritual focus of Kati Bihu — which deities or beings are honoured?
Kati Bihu centres on three: ancestors (Pitrs) — honoured with tarpan (black sesame in water, facing south); Tulsi — worshipped at the courtyard tulsi-mancha with a ghee-diya and flowers; and the paddy fields themselves — diyas are placed at field boundaries to petition cosmic forces for the Aghon harvest.
