About this festival
Jayaparvati Vrat is one of the most important vrats (fasts) observed by Gujarati women, spanning five days during Ashadh Shukla (the bright half of Ashadh, June-July). The vrat is observed in honor of Goddess Parvati and her daughter Jaya — it is also associated with Rati Devi, the consort of Kamadeva. Unmarried girls observe this vrat to get a good husband (like Shiva for Parvati), and married women fast for the well-being of their husbands and family. The ritual involves drawing Ashtadala lotus (eight-petal lotus) on the ground, filling it with water, worshipping Parvati and Jaya, and telling the vrat katha (votive story). The vrat is so popular in Gujarat that it is virtually a state-wide observance during the five days. Coastal Gujarat and Saurashtra observe it with particular enthusiasm.
