About this festival
Igas Bagwal ('Igas' = Ekadashi + 'Bagwal' = festival of lights) is Garhwal's own Diwali — celebrated 11 days after the main Diwali on Ekadashi of Kartik month. According to Garhwali tradition, news of Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya reached the remote mountain villages of Uttarakhand only 11 days after the plains celebrated Diwali, so they held their own celebration on this day. The festival is known for the Bhailwadang tradition — a dramatic bonfire where huge bundles of grass (bhail) are lit and swung in circles to create spectacular fire vortices. The night sky of Garhwali villages blazes with these fiery circles — a uniquely photogenic and deeply joyful tradition.

A tithi begins and ends at the same instant everywhere on Earth — only your local clock reading differs. That is why the same tithi can fall on the previous or the next calendar day where you live, even though the festival date on this page follows the Vedic Panchang, IST.
Classical observance windows — sunrise, midday, afternoon, evening and midnight — are defined by your own sunrise and sunset, not by India's. The table below gives those local values for the major diaspora cities.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do Garhwali villages celebrate Diwali 11 days after the rest of India?
Garhwali tradition holds that news of Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya reached the remote mountain villages of Uttarakhand only 11 days after the plains celebrated Diwali. So Garhwal holds its own celebration on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi — called Igas Bagwal — to honour that delayed joy with the same fullness.
What is Bhailwadang and how is it performed?
Bhailwadang is the signature ritual of Igas Bagwal. Huge bundles of grass (bhail) are tied to ropes and set ablaze after sunset. Village men swing the burning bundles in wide circles above their heads, creating spectacular fire vortices in the night sky. This ceremony illuminates the mountain sky with spinning fire.
What are the traditional sweets of Igas Bagwal?
The traditional sweets of Igas Bagwal are Arsa (a round sweet made from rice flour and jaggery, deep-fried) and Singori (a cone-shaped sweet of khoya wrapped in a maalu leaf). Both are prepared at home and shared during the communal feast, along with traditional Garhwali dishes like jhangora, mandua roti, and kafuli.

Which folk dances are performed on Igas Bagwal night?
Two signature Garhwali folk dances are performed on Igas Bagwal night. Choliya is a traditional sword dance performed by men in elaborate attire. Langvir Nritya is an acrobatic dance requiring great physical skill. Both are accompanied by traditional Garhwali drums and songs in village courtyards throughout the night.
