About this festival
Ghatasthapana (11 Oct 2026, Ashwin Shukla Pratipada) is Day 1 of Sharad Navratri — the most sacred opening ritual of the nine-night Durga worship. A kalash (sacred copper pot) filled with Ganga-jal, mango leaves, coconut, and barley seeds is installed before the Devi image. The barley sprouts over nine days symbolise prosperity; on Vijayadashami the kalash is immersed. Performing Ghatasthapana correctly is binding — the rest of Navratri rituals depend on it.

A tithi begins and ends at the same instant everywhere on Earth — only your local clock reading differs. That is why the same tithi can fall on the previous or the next calendar day where you live, even though the festival date on this page follows the Vedic Panchang, IST.
Classical observance windows — sunrise, midday, afternoon, evening and midnight — are defined by your own sunrise and sunset, not by India's. The table below gives those local values for the major diaspora cities.

Why Begin Navratri with a Kalash?
Per the Markandeya Purana (which contains Devi Mahatmya), when the demon Mahishasura terrorised the three worlds, the gods could not contain him. They surrendered their tejas (energies) into a single luminous pillar — and from that pillar emerged Durga. The kalash represents this cosmic vessel: the womb in which all gods' powers were concentrated before Durga emerged.
Each item in the kalash is symbolic: Ganga-jal (purification), mango leaves (auspicious arrival), coconut (Lakshmi seated above), barley sprouts (Annapurna's harvest blessing), 9 grains in soil (the 9 forms of Durga). The kalava-thread around the neck is the sutra binding the macrocosm to the microcosm of the home.
Across 9 days the barley grows. If the sprouts grow tall, green, and dense, the household will see prosperity in the coming year. If sparse or yellow, the family is warned to redouble dharma and charity. This single ritual encodes Hindu cosmology, agronomy, and household ethics in one act.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why must Ghatasthapana be performed within a specific muhurat window and not at any time of day?
The Kalash is the sacred vessel from which Devi Durga is invoked — establishing it at an inauspicious time is believed to weaken the nine-day sadhana. Chitra Nakshatra and Vaidhriti Yoga windows are specifically avoided. The preferred time is early morning after sunrise; the Abhijit muhurat (midday) is used only as a fallback.
What does the barley sown in the kalash soil signify and how is it read?
Barley seeds (saptadhanya) sown in the soil at Ghatasthapana grow over nine days. Per the Markandeya Purana tradition, tall, dense, green sprouts at the end of Navratri indicate household prosperity in the coming year. Sparse or yellowing growth is a gentle warning to increase dharma, charity, and devotional practice.
Which form of Devi is worshipped on Navratri Day 1 (Ghatasthapana day)?
Day 1 of Sharad Navratri is dedicated to Maa Shailaputri — the 'daughter of the mountain,' the first of the nine Navadurga forms. Shailaputri is Parvati in her primordial form, holding a trident and lotus, riding Nandi the bull. The colour of Day 1 is orange or yellow.
What is the scriptural basis for the Kalash as Durga's symbol?
Per the Markandeya Purana (Devi Mahatmya), when gods pooled their tejas into a single luminous pillar, Durga emerged from it. The Kalash represents this cosmic vessel: each item inside symbolises a god's energy — the coconut on top represents Lakshmi, the water represents purification, and the nine grains mirror Durga's nine forms.
