Bhadrapada Purnima (also called Proshtapadi Purnima) marks the boundary between the bright and dark fortnights of Bhadrapada. The 16-day Pitru Paksha begins on or just after this Purnima and ends on Sarvapitri Amavasya. Vedic tradition holds that ancestors are most accessible to offerings during this lunar fortnight.

What is tarpan and how is it offered on Bhadrapada Purnima?
Tarpan is a water offering for the departed, performed by mixing water with black sesame seeds and kusha grass. Facing south, the devotee pours the water through the right hand while naming the ancestor (gotra and name of the departed). This is offered thrice per ancestor, with prayers for their peace and liberation.

What charity is most beneficial for departed ancestors on this Purnima?
Donating food, clothing, blankets, and household necessities to Brahmins or the needy in the name of departed ancestors is considered most beneficial. Offering a meal (Shraddha bhojan) and feeding crows — regarded as messengers of the Pitru Devas — are also traditional acts of ancestral reverence on this day.

Can Bhadrapada Purnima tarpan substitute for the full 16-day Pitru Paksha shraddha?
No. This Purnima tarpan initiates Pitru Paksha but does not replace the specific Shraddha done on the tithi of the ancestor's death. The complete Pitru Paksha runs until Sarvapitri Amavasya. However, if one can only observe one day, the Purnima tarpan is meritorious and a sincere beginning.
