About this festival
Amalaki Ekadashi (27 Feb 2026) falls on Phalguna Shukla Ekadashi. The amalaki (Indian gooseberry, Amla, Phyllanthus emblica) is sacred to Lord Vishnu — per Brahmavaivarta Purana, it sprang from Vishnu's own forehead. On this Ekadashi, devotees worship an amalaki tree (or place its fruit before Vishnu murti). The vrat is said to grant the merit of donating an entire mountain of gold.

A tithi begins and ends at the same instant everywhere on Earth — only your local clock reading differs. That is why the same tithi can fall on the previous or the next calendar day where you live, even though the festival date on this page follows the Vedic Panchang, IST.
Classical observance windows — sunrise, midday, afternoon, evening and midnight — are defined by your own sunrise and sunset, not by India's. The table below gives those local values for the major diaspora cities.

How the Amla Became Vishnu's Tree
Per Brahmavaivarta Purana, after the creation of the universe, Brahma sat in meditation seeking guidance from Lord Vishnu. From the meditation of Vishnu's own forehead, a single droplet of nectar fell to earth. From that drop sprang the first amalaki tree — small, hardy, eternally fruit-bearing.
Vishnu declared: 'Whoever worships this tree on Phalguna Shukla Ekadashi obtains the merit of donating a mountain of gold. The fruit itself is sattvic Vaishnava prasad — eating it accumulates rapid bhakti-shakti.' The Padma Purana adds that amla is the only fruit that Lakshmi will not desert — placing amla in a household is said to anchor Lakshmi permanently.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Amalaki Ekadashi unique among all Ekadashis?
Amalaki Ekadashi falls on Phalguna Shukla Ekadashi — the last Ekadashi of the Hindu lunar year. Its uniqueness lies in worshipping the amalaki (amla) tree itself — per Brahmavaivarta Purana the tree sprang from Vishnu's own forehead. The vrat is said to equal the merit of donating a mountain of gold.
How should I perform Amalaki Ekadashi puja if I do not have an amla tree nearby?
If no amalaki tree is accessible, place fresh amla fruits before the Vishnu murti at your home altar. Offer panchamrit, tulsi, amla fruits, and yellow flowers. Circumambulate the fruits seven times reciting 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya'. Donating amla fruits or amla murabba (preserve) to a Brahmin completes the vrat.
What is the connection between the amla tree and Goddess Lakshmi?
Per Padma Purana, the amla fruit is the only fruit that Goddess Lakshmi will never leave. Keeping amla in the household is said to anchor Lakshmi's presence permanently. This is why distributing amla fruits as prasad on Amalaki Ekadashi is also considered a rite for household prosperity.
