About this festival
Gauri Vrat is a Gujarati festival observed primarily by young women on Chaitra Shukla Tritiya (third day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra month, March-April). Gauri is a form of Goddess Parvati in her benevolent, life-giving aspect. The vrat is observed for the protection of the family, the blessings of children and marriage, and the prosperity of the household. Women fast, prepare special foods, draw Gauri's image with rangoli or kumkum, and retell the Gauri Vrat katha. The festival has a strong link with the coming of spring — new life, prosperity, and abundance. In Gujarat, the Gauri Vrat is celebrated with particular enthusiasm in the Saurashtra and central Gujarat regions. The vrat is also associated with the beginning of the Gujarati wedding season (summer wedding season starts after Gauri Vrat).
