Legend & History
Pavagadh has a rich blend of Shakta and local legends. The hill's name derives from 'Pava Gadh' — 'pava' is a local term meaning 'quarter' (the quarter yogi Gorakhnath), and 'gadh' means fort. The great medieval Koli warrior-king of Pavagadh fort, Patai Raval, held this hillfort until it was conquered by Mahmud Begada of the Gujarat Sultanate in 1484 CE — a siege that lasted 20 months. According to tradition, Mahakali Mata appeared to the besieged king in a dream and told him his time was up, after which he surrendered the fort to the Sultanate. The original shikhar (tower) of the Mahakali temple was damaged during the conquest and was only restored in the 21st century (completed 2022) after a major renovation drive. The completed shikhara's installation was celebrated as a major spiritual event across Gujarat.
