Is a solar eclipse (Surya Grahan) visible in India?

Visibility differs for each eclipse. Sutak (the ritual caution period) and temple closures are observed only when the eclipse is actually visible at your location; a solar eclipse not visible in India is generally not observed for Sutak there.

What should be avoided during a solar eclipse?

Traditionally one avoids eating, new auspicious work and idol-touching during the Sutak and eclipse window, while chanting mantras, meditating and donating afterwards. Pregnant women are advised rest. Always use safe viewing methods to protect the eyes.

What to do after the eclipse ends?

Bathe, clean and purify the home, change/refresh water and food, perform puja and offer charity (daan). These acts mark the return to normal auspicious routine after the Grahan.
