🌊 Major Ghats
🔥 Dashashwamedh Ghat
The most famous ghat. Every evening, 7 priests — representing the Sapta Rishi (seven sages) — perform a roughly 45-minute Ganga Aarti with fire, conch, and flowers to Mother Ganga.
- Evening Aarti begins just after sunset — approx 6:45 PM (summer), 6:00 PM (winter)
- Free entry — best viewed from a boat
- Arrive 30–40 min early — seats fill fast
🕯️ Manikarnika Ghat
The Moksha Ghat — Hinduism's most sacred cremation ground. Tradition holds that cremation here grants moksha (liberation), as Shiva himself whispers the Taraka mantra to the departed. By belief, its pyre-fire is never allowed to go out.
- Cremations continue 24 hours
- Photography strictly prohibited
- View respectfully from a distance
🌅 Assi Ghat
Famous for the sunrise Ganga Aarti, morning yoga and meditation. The dawn boat ride from Assi Ghat (around 5:30 AM) is an unforgettable spiritual experience.
- Sunrise Ganga Aarti + yoga: ~5:30–7:00 AM
- Sunrise boat rides available
- Cafes and seating on the ghat
🏛️ Harishchandra Ghat
The second major cremation ghat — quieter and less crowded than Manikarnika. By legend, the truthful king Harishchandra served here at the cremation ground to uphold his vow of truth (satya).
- Active 24 hours
- Quieter and less crowded
- Linked to the legend of King Harishchandra
📜 Tulsi Ghat
Sacred ghat linked to Goswami Tulsidas, who lived here while composing the Ramcharitmanas (and, by tradition, the Hanuman Chalisa).
- Sacred memorial to Tulsidas
- Nag Nathaiya leela in Kartik (Oct–Nov) — Krishna subdues serpent Kaliya
- A must-see during the boat ride
🪷 Pancha Tirtha — the Five-Ghat Pilgrimage
The traditional Panchatirthi Yatra bathes at five ghats in a single day, in this order: Assi → Dashashwamedh → Adi Keshav → Panchganga → Manikarnika (the culmination). Bathing at all five is said to equal the merit of bathing at every ghat of Kashi.

- Book boat 30 minutes before evening Aarti or take front seat
- Wear modest clothing — respect is essential at all ghats
- Be prepared to walk barefoot — most ghats are open spaces
