Legend & History
According to both the Ramayana and the Kalika Purana, Sage Vashishtha (Basistha) chose South Guwahati for his ashram because the Brahmaputra valley here resonated with his tapas energy. It is said that the Suryavanshi kings — ancestors of Lord Rama — would send princes here for gurukul education under Vashishtha. Vashishtha's knowledge of the Gayatri Mantra, the Vedas, and Brahmavidya were transmitted here. The triveni sangam was used for ritual bathing before initiations. Today, the natural streams still flow through the forest ashram complex.
