Significance
Badrinath is one of the holiest Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu, situated between the Nar and Narayana peaks in the Garhwal Himalayas at 3,133 m (10,279 ft). It is one of the 108 Divya Desams and part of the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. The temple was re-established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century CE. The temple opens only six months a year due to extreme weather conditions.
Legend & History
According to legend, Lord Vishnu was performing penance in the area when Goddess Lakshmi protected him from harsh weather by transforming into a Badri tree (Indian jujube). Hence, the place came to be known as Badri-Vishal and later Badrinath. The temple houses a 1-meter-tall black stone idol of Lord Vishnu in a meditative posture.
