Having received the oath of Hari, make this word come true — O messenger of Ram, come running and hold back the affliction. It is here that the oath-motif begins, and this is what makes the text ugra.

Ghosts, spirits, pishachas, night-roamers, fire, vetalas, death and pestilence — let all these terrors be undone. Drive them away; the oath of Shri Ram is upon you. O Lord, uphold the dignity of your own name. This is the line on account of which tradition treats the text as one for crisis, not for daily recital.

Taking refuge at your feet, with folded hands I entreat you: at this hour, whom else should I call upon? Rise, rise, come — the plea of Shri Ram is upon you; falling at your feet with folded hands I implore. (This entreaty recurs twice in the text — the repetition is traditional.)

Bajrang Baan — Frequently Asked Questions
How many chaupais does the Bajrang Baan have?
The complete Bajrang Baan has one opening doha, 35 chaupai lines, and one closing doha. If your copy is missing the closing doha “Prem Prateetihin Kapi Bhajai…” or the final phalashruti “Yah Bajrang Baan Jo Jaapai…”, that copy is incomplete.
What is the difference between Bajrang Baan and Hanuman Chalisa?
The Hanuman Chalisa is a gentle hymn of praise — anyone may recite it daily. The Bajrang Baan is ugra: it calls on Hanuman ji by the oath of Shri Ram and Mata Sita to act at once, and it carries bija-mantras. Tradition therefore treats it as a text for crisis, not for daily recital.
When should Bajrang Baan be recited?
In grave crisis — threat to life, serious illness, or extraordinary adversity. As for timing, Brahma Muhurta on a Tuesday or Saturday (~1.5 hrs before sunrise) is considered best; evening recitation with a lit ghee lamp is also held to be effective. For everyday wishes, recite the Hanuman Chalisa instead.
Can Bajrang Baan be recited daily?
Tradition does not advise it. The Bajrang Baan binds the deity by an oath, which devotional tradition regards as an exceptionally forceful appeal — repeating it without cause is not considered appropriate. For daily practice, the Hanuman Chalisa or Sunderkand are the right choice. If you have begun a 3, 21 or 40-day vow, complete it unbroken.
Can women read Bajrang Baan?
Yes. Hanuman ji protects all devotees — women can wholeheartedly recite Bajrang Baan with faith and devotion. Devotion knows no distinction.
Can I stop mid-way during recitation?
It is best to complete Bajrang Baan in one sitting. If you must pause for an unavoidable reason, chant “Om Hanumate Namah” 11 times and restart from the beginning.
What do “shapath” and “duhai” mean in the Bajrang Baan?
“Shapath” means a solemn oath and “duhai” an urgent plea. In lines such as “Inhen maaru tohi shapath Ram ki” and “Janaksuta Haridas kahaavau, taaki shapath vilamb na laavau”, the devotee calls on Hanuman ji by the oath of Shri Ram and Mata Sita to come to their aid without delay. It is precisely this that makes the text ugra.
Who composed the Bajrang Baan?
Tradition ascribes it to Goswami Tulsidas (16th–17th century), author of the Hanuman Chalisa and the Ramcharitmanas. The language is Awadhi. Manuscript transmission produced variant readings, so the text presented here was settled by comparing several independent copies and keeping the majority reading.
Can Bajrang Baan be used against an enemy?
No. The word “bairi” in the text refers to the fear, illness, obstruction and negative forces besetting the devotee — not to harming a person. Recitation undertaken to injure, control or take revenge on someone is not devotion, and tradition expressly forbids it.
