About this festival
Shravan Amavasya (12 Aug 2026) — also called Hariyali Amavasya (green Amavasya, named after the monsoon-greenery surrounding it) — is the new moon of the sacred Shravan month. Per Skanda Purana, this Amavasya is uniquely dedicated to tree-planting (especially Peepal, Banyan, Neem, Amla) — every tree planted today is said to bear the merit of 100 children's punya. Also a powerful pitra-tarpan day mid-Chaturmas.

A tithi begins and ends at the same instant everywhere on Earth — only your local clock reading differs. That is why the same tithi can fall on the previous or the next calendar day where you live, even though the festival date on this page follows the Vedic Panchang, IST.
Classical observance windows — sunrise, midday, afternoon, evening and midnight — are defined by your own sunrise and sunset, not by India's. The table below gives those local values for the major diaspora cities.

The Hariyali Tradition — Skanda Purana
Per Skanda Purana, after Devshayani Ekadashi the earth enters Vishnu's 'green sleep' — monsoon rains turn India lush. Shravan Amavasya marks the peak of this greenery. The Purana enjoins planting trees on this day as a way of repaying the Earth's nurturing: a tree planted today, watered through monsoon, takes root before Chaturmas ends.
The 'each tree = 100 children's merit' equation is from Padma Purana — emphasising that since trees outlive their planters and serve countless generations of birds, animals, and humans, planting one is a multi-generational dharmic act. Modern Indian states (Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana) hold mass tree-planting drives on this Amavasya.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is this Amavasya called 'Hariyali' and what makes it distinct from other Amavasyas?
It falls at the peak of the monsoon season when India is most lush and green (hariyali). Skanda Purana uniquely assigns it as a tree-planting day — a dharmic act celebrated by mid-Chaturmas greenery. No other Amavasya in the Hindu calendar carries this specific tree-planting injunction.
Which trees should be planted on Hariyali Amavasya for maximum spiritual merit?
Skanda Purana especially recommends Peepal (Ficus religiosa), Banyan, Neem, and Amla. Padma Purana adds that each tree planted today equals the punya of 100 children, because trees outlive their planters and serve countless generations of birds, animals, and humans — a multi-generational dharmic act.
How should pitra tarpan be performed on Shravan Amavasya?
Wake before sunrise and bathe. Face south with a copper vessel filled with water, black sesame, and five white flowers. Pour three streams of arghya reciting the Pitru Stotra ('Om Devebhyas-tarpayami, Pitrbhyas-tarpayami'). Donate til, water-pots, and monsoon fruits to complete the observance.
Is there a connection between Hariyali Amavasya and Vishnu's Chaturmas sleep?
Yes. Per Skanda Purana, after Devshayani Ekadashi the earth enters Vishnu's 'green sleep' — monsoon rains transform India. Shravan Amavasya marks the peak of this greening. Tree-planting is prescribed as a way of repaying the earth's nurturing, timed so new trees take root before Chaturmas ends.
