About this festival
Masik Durgashtami is the monthly observance of Maa Durga on the Shukla Paksha Ashtami of every Hindu month. It is the householder's regular Devi pujan day — 12 occurrences a year, each offering Devi's grace for protection, courage, and removal of obstacles. The strongest is Sharad Maha-Ashtami (October); the most rare is when Ashtami coincides with Friday or Tuesday.

Masik Durgashtami Vrat Vidhi
- Wake before sunrise; bathe with cold water and a drop of rose water or tulsi
- Wear red, pink, or maroon cotton; women may apply sindoor
- Set up the Devi pratima/photo on a red cloth with akshat, kumkum, and durva
- Light a ghee-lamp and dhup (sandalwood or rose); place a copper kalash with water + mango leaves
- Sankalp: Resolve the vrat by name and gotra for self/family welfare
- Recite the Durga Saptashati Chapter 4 (Shakradi Stuti) — minimum once
- Chant 'Om Dum Durgayai Namah' 108 times using a red coral or rudraksha mala
- Perform Kanya Puja (see below): invite 9 girls, wash feet, feed poori-chana-halwa, gift them
- Break fast after moonrise sighting with phalahaar; full meal next morning

Kanya Puja — The Living Heart of Durgashtami
Per the Devi Bhagavata Purana (Skandha 9, Chapter 47), young girls between ages 2 and 10 are living embodiments of the nine Durga forms (Navadurga). Worshipping them on Ashtami earns greater merit than puja of 10,000 stone idols. The girls are washed, seated, fed poori-chana-halwa, given new cloth or a coin, and bowed to as Devi herself.
The household variant: invite 9 girls (or whatever number is feasible — even 1 is acceptable). The girls should ideally NOT be from the same family. Each represents a specific Durga form by age: 2-yr = Kumarika, 3 = Trimurti, 4 = Kalyani, 5 = Rohini, 6 = Kalika, 7 = Chandika, 8 = Shanbhavi, 9 = Durga, 10 = Subhadra.
कन्या पूजा — दुर्गाष्टमी का जीवंत हृदय
देवी भागवत पुराण (स्कंध 9, अध्याय 47) के अनुसार 2 से 10 वर्ष की कन्याएँ नौ दुर्गा रूपों (नवदुर्गा) की जीवंत मूर्तियाँ हैं। अष्टमी को उनकी पूजा 10,000 पाषाण-मूर्तियों की पूजा से अधिक फल देती है। कन्याओं के चरण धोएँ, बिठाएँ, पूड़ी-चना-हलवा भोग दें, नया वस्त्र या सिक्का दें, और साक्षात् देवी मानकर प्रणाम करें।

Why is the Ashtami tithi specifically dedicated to Maa Durga?
Per the Devi Mahatmyam, Maa Durga slew the buffalo-demon Mahishasura on the Shukla Ashtami tithi. Therefore every Shukla Ashtami commemorates that victory. The Shakta tradition assigns the eighth tithi of each fortnight to Devi worship; the Shukla Ashtami is the pre-eminent one as it falls in the growing-moon fortnight.

What is the correct fast duration for Masik Durgashtami?
The recommended fast runs from sunrise to moonrise — a partial day-fast. The elderly and those with health conditions may observe phalahaar (fruit and milk). The vrat is broken only after moonrise with a simple sattvic meal. Brahma Muhurat (around 04:30–05:18 AM) and Abhijit muhurta (around 11:51 AM–12:43 PM) are the preferred puja windows.

Is Kanya Puja done on every Masik Durgashtami or only on Navratri?
The full Kanya Puja (nine-girl ritual with full bhog) is traditionally the centrepiece of Navratri Ashtami. On Masik Durgashtami too, householders are encouraged to perform a simplified version with at least one young girl — offering kumkum, new cloth, and a meal. It is a merit-multiplier on any Durgashtami.
