Chaitra Amavasya (19 Mar 2026) is the new moon at the very edge of the Hindu lunar year — the day BEFORE Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (Gudi Padwa / Ugadi / New Year). Per Garuda Purana, this is one of the four 'Bhutadi Amavasyas' (year-cusp Amavasyas) where the spiritual veil between worlds is thinnest. Pitra tarpan, snan-daan, and final-year-clearing rituals are prescribed before the New Year begins the next day.

The 4 Bhutadi Amavasyas — Garuda Purana
Per Garuda Purana (Pretakhanda Ch 15), four Amavasyas in the lunar year are designated as 'Bhutadi' — the time when the cosmic veil between the realm of pitrs and the living is thinnest:
(1) Chaitra Amavasya — closes the lunar year, opens for Chaitra Navratri (this entry). (2) Bhadrapada Amavasya — closes Pitru Paksha shradh fortnight (also called Sarvapitri Amavasya). (3) Kartika Amavasya — Diwali eve; Lakshmi enters but Pitrs are also active at dusk. (4) Magha Amavasya — Mauni Amavasya, climactic Magh Mela day.
Of these four, Chaitra Amavasya has a unique role: it is the year's FINAL day. Whatever karma was incomplete, whatever pitra-tarpan was missed, whatever dana was promised but not given — this Amavasya is the last opportunity. The next morning (Gudi Padwa) begins the fresh karma-ledger.
4 भूताडि अमावस्याएँ — गरुड़ पुराण
गरुड़ पुराण (प्रेतखंड अध्याय 15) के अनुसार चान्द्र वर्ष की चार अमावस्याएँ 'भूताडि' निर्धारित हैं — वह समय जब पितृ-लोक और जीवित-लोक के बीच ब्रह्मांडीय आवरण सबसे पतला होता है:
