About this festival
Ambubachi Mela 2026 is one of the greatest Shakta festivals at Kamakhya Temple, Guwahati. The goddess Kamakhya is believed to enter her annual menstrual cycle for 3 days when the temple is closed; on the 4th day (Nivritti) the temple reopens with grand celebrations attended by lakhs of devotees and tantric sadhus.

A tithi begins and ends at the same instant everywhere on Earth — only your local clock reading differs. That is why the same tithi can fall on the previous or the next calendar day where you live, even though the festival date on this page follows the Vedic Panchang, IST.
Classical observance windows — sunrise, midday, afternoon, evening and midnight — are defined by your own sunrise and sunset, not by India's. The table below gives those local values for the major diaspora cities.

Why Kamakhya is the Most Powerful Shakti Peeth
- When Lord Shiva carried Sati's burning body across the cosmos, her yoni fell on Nilachal Hill — making this the seat of creative Shakti
- Referenced in the Kalika Purana (written in Assam, c. 10th century) as the supreme Shakti site
- The temple has no idol of the goddess — only a natural yoni-shaped stone (swayambhu) with a perennial spring
- The Brahmaputra near the temple is said to turn red during Ambubachi (mineral-rich soil; devotees see it as Devi's blessing)
