It is called Purushottam Amavasya because the Adhik Maas is dedicated to Lord Purushottam (Vishnu's supreme form). Purushottam Maas — The Extra Month for Vishnu
Per Padma Purana (Adhika Maas section), the intercalary lunar month was once considered inauspicious — falling outside the 12 named months. The Adhika Maas devis approached Lord Vishnu in distress. Vishnu accepted it as His own personal month and named it 'Purushottam Maas' — dedicated to His supreme (Purushottam) form.
Hence every act of dharma during Adhik Maas — tarpan, dana, vrat, recitation — is held to earn multiplied merit. The Amavasya at the heart of the month, when 'extra' and 'darkest tithi' overlap, is among the most powerful pitru-shanti days of the leap month.
पुरुषोत्तम मास — विष्णु हेतु अतिरिक्त मास
पद्म पुराण (अधिक मास खंड) के अनुसार अधिक (अंतर्कलाधीन) चान्द्र मास एक समय अशुभ माना जाता था — 12 नामित मासों से बाहर। अधिक मास की देवियाँ व्यथित होकर भगवान विष्णु के पास गईं। विष्णु ने इसे अपना व्यक्तिगत मास स्वीकार कर 'पुरुषोत्तम मास' नाम दिया — उनके सर्वोच्च (पुरुषोत्तम) रूप को समर्पित।
