The Nagaraja tradition in Garhwal traces back to pre-Vedic Nag worship. According to local legend, the Nagaraja appeared to a tribal chieftain in a dream and commanded the construction of a temple at Sem. Since then, the Nag deity has been the primary kuldevta (clan deity) of several Garhwali families. The Nag deity is invoked through the Jagar tradition — a form of spirit possession and shamanic invocation unique to the Garhwal Himalayas — where the Nagdevta communicates his will through a possessed Jagariya (oracle). Devotees seek the deity's blessings for curing snake-bite ailments, resolving family curses (Kaal Sarp Dosha), and for rain during droughts.
