Significance & Importance
Lord Vitthal (also Pandurang or Vithoba), enshrined at Pandharpur on the Bhima river, stands with hands on hips upon a brick waiting for his devotee Pundalika. The aarti 'Jai Vitthal Jai Vitthal' is the supreme expression of Maharashtra's Warkari devotion.
The origin story of Vitthal's posture is itself a teaching. Pundalika was absorbed in serving his aged parents when Vitthal arrived at his door. Not wishing to interrupt his filial duty, Pundalika tossed a brick outside and asked the Lord to wait. The Lord waited -- and continues to wait for every soul that turns toward him. The brick on which he stands embodies how the Divine honours sincere human virtue and awaits the heart's readiness.
The sant-poets Jnaneshwar, Namdev, Eknath and Tukaram -- whose abhangas form the spiritual literature of Maharashtra -- all sang his glory and walked barefoot to Pandharpur. The Wari pilgrimage on Ashadhi Ekadashi and Kartiki Ekadashi brings streams of chanting pilgrims from across the region. Singing 'Jai Vitthal' is understood as joining that procession of seekers across the centuries.
