Significance & Importance
Skandamata — fifth of the nine Navadurga forms — is the divine mother of Lord Kartikeya (Skanda), and 'Jai Skandamata' is the aarti of her fifth-day Navratri worship. She holds her infant son in her lap while embodying the fierce maternal grace of the Goddess.
Her form is four-armed and of radiant fair complexion. She carries infant Skanda in one right arm, holds a lotus in another, and displays the varada mudra. Her mount is the lion — symbol of courage — yet she is also Padmasana, seated upon the lotus, evoking purity and the calm of liberated consciousness.
Skanda, her divine son Kartikeya, is the commander of the celestial armies, worshipped as Murugan in South India. By honouring Skandamata, devotees seek her maternal grace and Skanda's blessings. Tradition holds that contemplating her on the fifth day of Navratri brings wisdom and grace on the path to liberation.
The aarti is sung on the fifth night of both Chaitra and Sharad Navratri. Devotees offer bananas, white flowers and white sweets. Her worship is especially cherished by parents praying for the well-being of their children.
