Vaishno Devi is one of the most revered Hindu temples and one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India, attracting millions of devotees annually. The shrine is located in a cave at an altitude of 5,200 feet. The goddess manifests in three natural rock formations called Pindies representing Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati. It is revered among the 108 Shakti Peethas rather than the classical 51 anga-Peethas.
Legend & History
According to tradition, the goddess took human form as Vaishnavi and lived in devotion in the Trikuta mountains. The tantric Bhairon Nath, enamoured and relentless, pursued her; in the holy cave she finally beheaded him. In his last moments Bhairon Nath repented and sought forgiveness, so the goddess granted that a pilgrim's journey is complete only after visiting his shrine. Vaishnavi then merged into three sacred rock Pindies.
