Legend & History
According to the Kalika Purana, Lord Shiva brought Devi Uma (Parvati) to this island for seclusion during their honeymoon. Kamadeva (the god of love) disturbed their privacy and was burned to ashes by Shiva's third eye — hence the island is also called 'Bhasmachal' (Hill of Ashes). Kamadeva was later revived at Umananda island by Goddess Rati's prayers, and a small Kamadeva shrine exists here. The original temple was built by Ahom King Gadadhar Singha in 1694 CE and has been renovated multiple times.

कालिका पुराण के अनुसार, भगवान शिव देवी उमा को अपने मधुमास के लिए इस द्वीप पर लाए थे। कामदेव ने उनकी एकांत भंग की और शिव के तीसरे नेत्र से भस्म हो गए — इसीलिए द्वीप को 'भस्मचल' भी कहते हैं। अहोम राजा गदाधर सिंह ने 1694 ई. में मूल मंदिर का निर्माण कराया था।
