Significance
The Aghaar Jitto shrine honors Baba Jitto, a legendary Dogra farmer-saint of the 17th century who became a symbol of justice, sacrifice, and divine protection of the poor. According to Dogri tradition, Jitto sacrificed his life protesting the unjust extortion of crops by a greedy landlord — and upon his death, the heavens bore witness to his righteousness. The deity is revered across Jammu as a protector of farmers and the poor. The annual Jhiri Mela (held at Jhiri, Ramnagar, near this shrine in November) is one of the largest folk fairs of Jammu.
Legend & History
Baba Jitto was a humble Dogra farmer in the 17th century who cultivated his fields with devotion and lived a life of simple piety. When his landlord (zamindar) demanded a share of the crop far beyond what was fair, Jitto refused and protested through prayer and fasting. The zamindar's men came to seize the harvest by force. In despair and in an act of ultimate protest, Jitto ended his life in the field — calling out to God to witness his sacrifice. His death sparked divine intervention: according to legend, the crops of the village immediately withered as a sign of cosmic justice. Baba Jitto was deified by the Dogra community and is now worshipped as a guardian spirit of farmers and the oppressed. The Jhiri Mela — held annually near Ramnagar in November — commemorates his sacrifice and draws half a million pilgrims.
