Legend & History
Sage Gautama lived here with his wife Ahilya. Jealous sages tricked him into the sin of accidentally killing a cow. To atone, he did intense penance and prayed for the Ganga to purify his hermitage; Shiva released her, and she flowed as the Godavari. Pleased with his devotion, Shiva stayed on as Trimbakeshwar.
