Significance
Rameshwaram is one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites and also one of the twelve Jyotirlinga temples. Located on Pamban Island, it is one of the holiest places for Hindus. The temple is famous for its magnificent architecture, especially its outer corridor of 1,212 carved pillars — the longest temple corridor in India (about 1,200 metres). It has 22 sacred wells (theerthas) within the temple complex. Rameshwaram is considered the southernmost Jyotirlinga.
Legend & History
According to Ramayana, Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva here to absolve himself of the sin of killing Ravana, a Brahmin. Rama installed a Shiva Linga here and prayed for forgiveness. The temple is believed to have been built by Lord Rama with the help of Vanara Sena. Goddess Parvati is also worshipped here as Parvathavardhini. The temple's construction in its present form was done in the 12th century, with contributions from various dynasties.
