The holy cave of Amarnath, set at about 3,888 metres in the Himalayas of Jammu & Kashmir, is among the most sacred tirthas of Lord Shiva. Inside the cave a Shivlinga of ice (the Hima-lingam) forms naturally each year and waxes and wanes with the phases of the moon — which is why it is revered as a swayambhu (self-manifested) Shivlinga.

Helicopter option

Best time, weather & altitude/health safety
The yatra runs only during the fixed July–August window. Weather at this altitude changes fast — sunshine can give way to sudden rain, cold and strong winds.
