Introduction & significance of the ice Shivlinga
The holy cave of Amarnath, set at about 3,888 metres in the Himalayas of Jammu & Kashmir, is among the most sacred tirthas of Lord Shiva. Inside the cave a Shivlinga of ice (the Hima-lingam) forms naturally each year and waxes and wanes with the phases of the moon — which is why it is revered as a swayambhu (self-manifested) Shivlinga.
By tradition, it was in this very cave that Lord Shiva narrated the story of immortality — the "Amar Katha" — to Mata Parvati. This spiritual significance draws lakhs of devotees during the month of Shravan to undertake this arduous yet deeply meritorious yatra, hailing "Har Har Mahadev" as they take darshan of the ice Shivlinga.
Amarnath Yatra 2026 dates

The two routes: Pahalgam vs Baltal
| Route | Distance | Time | Character | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pahalgam (Anantnag) | ~36–48 km | 3–5 days | Gentler gradient, traditional route | Pilgrims who prefer an easier climb and the classic darshan path |
| Baltal (Ganderbal) | ~14–15 km | 1–2 days | Shorter but steeper, demands good fitness | Fit pilgrims short on time who can manage a steep ascent |
Helicopter option
Helicopter services run from both axes (Baltal and Pahalgam) up to the Panjtarni helipad, saving most of the climb. From Panjtarni, however, the final ~6 km to the holy cave is still covered on foot or by pony/palki. Confirm helicopter fares and slots on the official Shrine Board portal.
Best time, weather & altitude/health safety
The yatra runs only during the fixed July–August window. Weather at this altitude changes fast — sunshine can give way to sudden rain, cold and strong winds. To guard against altitude sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness), acclimatise gradually, stay well hydrated, and take symptoms such as headache, dizziness or breathlessness seriously. Pilgrims with heart, blood-pressure or respiratory conditions must consult a doctor before applying.

The Pahalgam route (about 36–48 km) is longer but has a gentler gradient and is the traditional path, taking 3–5 days. The Baltal route (about 14–15 km) is much shorter but steeper and more strenuous, often done in 1–2 days. Choose Pahalgam for an easier climb and Baltal if you are fit and short on time.
