Offering Mustard Oil to Shani Dev — Significance, Reason and Method

Last updated: 14 June 2026

The oldest and most proven remedy for Shani Shanti

The Legend — Hanuman and Shani

A popular legend tells that when Hanuman freed Shani Dev from Ravana's captivity, Shani was in pain. Hanuman soothed his limbs with oil. Pleased, Shani vowed that whoever offers him oil — and whoever is a devotee of Hanuman — will be spared his harsh gaze.

This is the basis of the Saturday oil-offering tradition. The oil is said to ease the ache of his "slow gait" (Mandagati) — which is why Hanuman and Shani are worshipped together on Saturdays.

The Secret Behind the Oil Offering

Why mustard oil specifically?

Shani is associated with dark colour and the west direction. Mustard oil's dark, intense and warm nature matches Saturn's energy. Mythologically, oil is said to cool Shani's intense "heat."

Why an iron vessel?

Iron is Shani's metal. Placing oil in an iron vessel amplifies both Saturn's energy and the offering's power.

Why the west direction?

West is Shani's direction. Facing west or placing the lamp to the west pleases Shani Dev most quickly.
