Questions and Answers
Which mantras are best for focus and memory in studies and exams?
Traditionally the mantras of Maa Saraswati, the goddess of learning, are considered foremost — "Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah" and "Saraswati Namastubhyam...". For intellect and memory the Vedic Medha Suktam, and the Gayatri Mantra to illuminate the mind, are also chanted with devotion by students.
Can a Ganesha mantra be chanted before an exam?
Yes. Shri Ganesha is regarded as the remover of obstacles and the lord of intellect, so chanting "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah" before any new task or exam is traditionally considered auspicious. It is customarily chanted together with a Saraswati mantra of learning, and is believed to help calm nervousness.
How should one chant a mantra before starting study?
After bathing and wearing clean clothes, sit facing East or North, remember Maa Saraswati, and chant the mantra 21 or 108 times on a Rudraksha or crystal mala. Then begin studying with a calm mind. Tradition holds consistency to be the basis of benefit.
What is the best time to chant these mantras?
Early morning, especially during Brahma Muhurat before studying, is considered best. For the Saraswati mantra, Wednesday and Basant Panchami are traditionally regarded as especially auspicious. These practices complement devotion and hard work — no mantra can replace diligent effort.
