Dharmasthala kshetra lies on the banks of the Netravati river in Dakshina Kannada district. Sri Manjunatha Swamy (Shiva) is the presiding deity. About 800 years ago, the Dharma Daivas appeared to Sri Birmanna Pergade and established the temple. To this day, "Dharmadhikaris" of the Heggade lineage (currently Dr. Veerendra Heggade) administer the shrine. Uniquely — it is a Shiva temple where the priests are Vaishnava Madhwa Brahmins and the administrator is from the Jain Heggade family.
