The Chamundeshwari Temple stands atop the 1062-meter Chamundi Hill near Mysore. It is famed as the site where the Goddess slew Mahishasura. As the family deity of the Wodeyar dynasty, Chamundeshwari worship is the centrepiece of the world-renowned Mysore Dasara festival. The 1000-step climb and golden chariot procession are signature traditions.

Mysore Dasara Tradition
Celebrated for 10 days from Ashwayuja Shuddha Padyami to Vijayadashami as the "Naadahabba" (state festival). Initiated by Wodeyar kings 400 years ago, this tradition is on the UNESCO heritage list. On Vijayadashami, the Chamundeshwari idol is paraded in a golden ambari (howdah).
