Significance
The Modhera Sun Temple is one of the finest examples of Solanki (Chaulukya) dynasty architecture in Gujarat and ranks alongside Konark Sun Temple (Odisha) and Martand Sun Temple (Kashmir) as one of India's greatest sun temples. Built in 1026 CE by King Bhimdev I of the Chaulukya dynasty, the temple complex consists of three parts: the Surya Kund (tank/vav — an elaborately carved step-well with over 100 sub-shrines), the Sabha Mandap (assembly hall), and the Guda Mandap (shrine). The temple is astronomically aligned so that on the equinoxes (March and September), the rising sun directly illuminates the main idol of Surya at dawn. The intricate carvings of the outer wall and the step-well are of extraordinary quality — depicting the entire Hindu pantheon, apsaras, yakshas, and detailed scenes from the epics. While the temple is no longer an active place of worship (it is an ASI-protected monument), the Uttarayan festival is celebrated here annually and a Modhera Dance Festival (Uttarayan weekend) is held in the complex courtyard. On the UNESCO Tentative World Heritage List since 2014.
Legend & History
Modhera was the capital of the Modha Brahmin community and is mentioned as 'Dharmaranya' in ancient texts. The Pushpavati River flowing beside the temple was considered sacred (literally: 'flower-bearing river'). According to local tradition, Modhera's Surya Temple was built to atone for an inadvertent offense to the Sun god by King Bhimdev I, who sought to elevate Modhera as a Surya Kshetra (Sun sacred zone) to rival the famous sun shrines of Konark and Martand. A story holds that the great saint Mirabai (of Krishna devotion fame) visited Modhera on her journey from Rajasthan and paused here to worship the Sun god, blessing the temple with her presence. The step-well (Surya Kund) was used for ritualistic bathing before solar worship — pilgrims would descend the steps at sunrise on Makar Sankranti (Uttarayan) for a holy dip while watching the sun rise to illuminate the main shrine.
Uttarayan / Makar Sankranti (January 14 — equinox solar alignment + Modhera Dance Festival); March equinox (solar alignment); Year-round for monuments; Winter (November-February) for outdoor exploration
