Vidyapati Bhagwati Bhajan (Maithili)
Significance & Importance
Mahakavi Vidyapati (c. 1352–1448 CE) is the foundational poet of Maithili literature and one of the greatest Shakta poets of medieval India. His Bhagwati pads — sung in the Mithila region for over six centuries — fuse Tantric Shakta theology with the lyrical sweetness of Maithili. The opening invocation 'Jay Jay Bhairavi' addresses the Goddess in her terrifying-yet-protective Bhairavi form, the consort of Pashupati (Shiva) and the source-energy (Aadya Shakti) of the cosmos. These verses form the daily liturgy at the Shyama Mai temple in Darbhanga, the Ugratara Sthan in Mahishi, and the Janaki Mandir in Janakpur.
