What is a Yatra (tirtha-yatra)?
A yatra is a Hindu pilgrimage — a sacred journey to a tirtha (holy place) such as a Jyotirlinga, Shakti Peeth, Char Dham temple or a river confluence. Tirtha literally means a "crossing place" between the worldly and the divine; visiting one is believed to grant darshan, punya (merit) and inner purification.

The most revered circuits are the 12 Jyotirlingas (supreme Shiva shrines), the Shakti Peethas (where parts of Goddess Sati fell), the India Char Dham (Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri and Rameswaram) and the Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath). What is the best time of year to go on a yatra?
It depends on the destination. Himalayan shrines like Kedarnath, Badrinath and Amarnath open only from late April/May to October/November because of snow. Plains and southern temples (Varanasi, Tirupati, Rameswaram) are best visited in the cooler October–March window. Always check the specific temple guide for opening dates and registration rules before travelling.
Do I need to register in advance for any yatra?
Yes for a few. The Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra and the Amarnath Yatra both require free/low-cost advance registration with a valid Aadhaar (and a health certificate for Amarnath). Most other temples need no registration — you simply arrive for darshan, though premium or quick-darshan tickets may be offered at large temples like Tirupati and Vaishno Devi.
