Significance & Importance
Chitragupta — born of Brahma to assist Yama in cosmic justice — is honoured in 'Jai Chitragupta Deva,' the aarti the Kayastha community has sung to their kuladeva for generations. He holds every soul's moral ledger, ensuring each being receives its perfect due.
According to the Puranic account, Brahma meditated for an immense span and from his body emerged Chitragupta — bearing a pen (kalam) and inkpot (dawat), charged with recording the complete moral ledger of every living soul. He serves Yama Dharmaraj as the scribe of karmic accounts. His two attributes — pen and inkpot — have made him the presiding deity of writing, administration and accountancy.
Chitragupta's principal festival is Yama Dwitiya (Bhai Dooj), on the second bright day of Kartik after Diwali. The Kayastha community performs the Kalam-Dawat Puja — consecrating writing implements — and sings this aarti, dedicating the year's work to truth and accuracy. Observed with great devotion in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Bengal.
The deeper significance is the invitation to every devotee: to live knowing that actions leave a trace, that integrity is its own worship, and that an honest life is the best accounting. His aarti is a timeless reminder of the ethical weight carried by every human choice.
