Ayodhya Kand Verse 270
भरत बचन सुचि सुनि सुर हरषे। साधु सराहि सुमन सुर बरषे ॥
असमंजस बस अवध नेवासी। प्रमुदित मन तापस बनबासी ॥
चुपहिं रहे रघुनाथ सँकोची। प्रभु गति देखि सभा सब सोची ॥
जनक दूत तेहि अवसर आए। मुनि बसिष्ठँ सुनि बेगि बोलाए ॥
करि प्रनाम तिन्ह रामु निहारे। बेषु देखि भए निपट दुखारे ॥
दूतन्ह मुनिबर बूझी बाता। कहहु बिदेह भूप कुसलाता ॥
सुनि सकुचाइ नाइ महि माथा। बोले चर बर जोरें हाथा ॥
बूझब राउर सादर साईं। कुसल हेतु सो भयउ गोसाईं ॥
दो. नाहि त कोसल नाथ कें साथ कुसल गइ नाथ।

dūtanha munibara būjhī bātā| kahahu bideha bhūpa kusalātā ||
suni sakucāi nāi mahi māthā| bole cara bara joreṃ hāthā ||
būjhaba rāura sādara sāīṃ| kusala hetu so bhayau gosāīṃ ||
do. nāhi ta kosala nātha keṃ sātha kusala gai nātha|

mithila avadha bisesha tem jagu saba bhayau anatha 270 Hearing Bharat's pure words, the gods rejoiced and showered flowers; the saints extolled him. The people of Ayodhya were caught between conflicting feelings, while the ascetics and forest dwellers were inwardly gladdened. Ram remained silent out of reticence, and the assembly grew anxious watching the Lord's mood. At that very moment messengers from King Janak arrived; Vasishtha quickly summoned them. The messengers bowed and looked upon Ram — on seeing his austere forest attire they were deeply pained. The sage asked the messengers about the welfare of King Janak; the messenger, bowing to the ground with folded hands and some embarrassment, replied — it is on account of your gracious enquiry that there is welfare. Otherwise, O Lord, welfare itself departed with the lord of Kosala — Mithila, Ayodhya, and the entire world have become bereft of a master.
भरत के पवित्र वचन सुनकर देवता हर्षित हुए और पुष्प वर्षा की, साधुओं ने सराहा। अयोध्यावासी असमंजस में थे, वनवासी तपस्वी मन से प्रसन्न थे। रघुनाथ संकोचवश चुप रहे और सभा प्रभु की गति देखकर सोच में पड़ गई। तभी उसी अवसर पर जनक के दूत आए; मुनि वसिष्ठ ने उन्हें शीघ्र बुलाया। दूतों ने प्रणाम कर राम को देखा — उनका वेश देखकर अत्यन्त दुखी हो गए। मुनिवर ने दूतों से राजा जनक का कुशल पूछा; दूत ने संकोचपूर्वक माथा झुकाकर हाथ जोड़कर कहा — आपने आदर से जो पूछा, उसी के कारण (आपकी पूछताछ के कारण) कुशल है। अन्यथा — हे नाथ, कोसल के नाथ (राम) के साथ कुशल चली गई — मिथिला, अयोध्या और सारा जगत अनाथ हो गया।
