Legend & History
According to legend, King Indradyumna was instructed by Lord Vishnu in a dream to construct a temple. He found a log floating in the sea, from which deities were carved. Lord Brahma came to consecrate the temple. The deities of Jagannath (Krishna), Balabhadra (Balarama), and Subhadra are unique wooden idols that are ceremonially replaced every 8, 12, or 19 years — when the lunar calendar has a leap Ashadha month — in the Nabakalevara ceremony. The Mahaprasad (sacred food) is considered supremely holy.
